To ask a technophobe question ( re iPhones)

So I have an iPhone which is about 4 years old. I don’t want to buy the latest one but was going to buy eg an iPhone 11 outright.
I was going to just start afresh on this phone ie I’m not bothered about getting photos transferred over as long as. I can view them on my old phone and. I don’t even mind typing all my contacts into new phone.
However, someone said that nowadays this isn’t possible ie if I didn’t effectively clone what’s on my old phone to my new phone I would eg lose absolutely everything say on WhatsApp and can’t just view my photo library on old phone ie it would just disappear?
So is nothing saved to sim anymore like back in the day when stuff would stay on your old phone and you could view it?
Thanks

Most of your stuff, photos etc may exist on a remote backup somewhere and it syncs your phone and account to that backup. I don't really see the problem with what you're proposing. Just let the phone handle the transfer

I can access all the photos I've taken since 2004 but I've only had current phone for a couple of months and the old photos aren't physically on my device.

If you still want to be able to view your photos, why wouldn't you just move them to your new phone instead of keeping an old phone just to store old photos on?

Aposterhasnoname · 19/08/2022 09:42

Depends where the photos are stored. It usually goes to the cloud, but if you’re a technophobe you might not have enabled this.

simple answer, take the sun out and see if you can still access them. But that said. I can’t see why you wouldn’t just transfer them across. It’s really easy.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/08/2022 09:42

Sim out goddamn it

BestIsWest · 19/08/2022 09:43

I’ve just done this. All my photos are saved to the cloud so it was just a case of transferring the sim to the new phone and signing in to my Apple ID on the new phone. My WhatsApp conversations have carried over too.

Best bet is to go to an Apple store, they'll be able to check if you're using an iCloud account and check what's backing up to it.

When you get your new phone, you can log in with your existing details and everything from your old phone will transfer.

Honestly, it's like witchcraft, amazingly easy to set up.

Summersea1235 · 19/08/2022 09:49

Thanks so far. As long as I can view the photos on my old phone, I’m not bothered about having them on my new phone as it would just take up tons of storage!
I just wish there was a way to keep them on the old phone and start afresh on the new phone

Oh and I went to the Apple store and they said they don’t help with the transfer anymore!?!

Aren't all the photos in your online account anyway?

That, and automatically transferring settings, apps etc from one phone to the next is also pretty standard with simple instructions if you google/look on the Apple website?

Back up your phone to the iCloud. It's ridiculously easy to transfer your data to a new iPhone now. The phone will talk you through all the steps.

Summersea1235 · 19/08/2022 09:58

Thanks- I’m just so untechnical that I wouldn’t feel confident doing this. Maybe if I ask someone else in the store immediately prior to buying the new one then they would help with this…

I'm sure they'll help if it means getting a sale Smile

Bunchesxxx · 19/08/2022 09:59

I've gone from an iPhone to an oppo. Even using the clone your phone app AND saving everything to Google drive I lost all my WhatsApp messages and only a fraction of my photos transferred. If you're going iPhone to iPhone everything will be on the iCloud and should just download to your new phone.

Photos don’t take up space on your phone anymore. They can be stored on the cloud. If you make an appointment with an Apple genius they will help you do
it. They sat with my dad last year and literally taught him how to text.

Malbecfan · 19/08/2022 10:18

I'm pretty sure there will be YouTube walkthroughs on this. I set up my new iPhone without help using a painfully slow internet connection without any issues. It was more problematic moving my dad's over to DD's old iPhone but some googling sorted it.

Alternatively, I have found cold, wet, weekday mornings the ideal time to ask for help in Apple stores as there are staff hanging around with nothing to do. My record is 50 minutes chat about how to use iMovie in my school and I didn't buy anything.

Yes. You literally can't get it wrong!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/08/2022 10:26

Back up immediately before transferring. You'll need to back you your WhatsApp separately I think. Depending on when it was last done. You put the new phone over the old one and it does it by magic.

Summersea1235 · 19/08/2022 10:31

Thanks so much, I forgot about the Apple genius folk. Good tip about going in on a cold wet morning and also I may try the bigger apple store!
