Uniform question

Hi all,

DS is starting a new school in September, will be going into year 6.

His previous school uniform was quite flexible in the fact that we could get the majority from supermarkets so relatively cheap - he had enough uniform for everyday without the need to do a wash.

His new school are strict with uniform. Nearly everything has to be purchased through school shop with school badge on it.

My question is - with branded school items do you buy enough for each day or buy less and wash during the week? I'm aware he's only got a year left so is it necessary to buy the whole weeks worth to make life that little bit easier?

Thank you Smile

I always had two sets and they wore them twice, in primary school.

Plumbear2 · 18/08/2022 07:55

I've only ever bought two. One to wear and one to wash

Buy less and wash, if needed! I usually buy 2 of each branded item.

We had 3 of each but definitely could have got away with 2 if we had to.

My DC don't need clean uniform every day - it's fine to wear things more than once.

I usually buy 2 or 3 and then get extras second hand from the school shop. Some things wear better than others but often get things in great condition.

Personally I have bought 3 branded jumpers mainly because I have weeks at the mo where washing can get out of hand, due to smaller child too. Plus he developed a habit of loosing his jumpers over the last year despite names.

I think 2 is very manageable at y6, or even 1. A friend only has one jumper but he's an only child and she works from home full time now so seems to be able keep on top of laundry more and to wash and dry over night if needed (but I think she just sponges at night.)

I think if they have to have branded Ts at y6 there's potentially more chance of BO. I've bought 3 to see how we go. Dark blue though so easier. When it was white I bought more but it didn't have to be branded.

It's been bloody expensive though, with branded jacket on top, as well as branded PE T and also jumper (!) so in the future I'm aiming for less. Seeing how we go this year.

I bought 3, just incase one became lost/damaged then they could survive with two! Although I made a big mistake on last year’s order and ended up with 5 polos and 4 jumpers! She’s going into year 11 and everything still fits so haven’t needed buy any this year 😅.

I had three or four shirts each, two shorts/pinafores and one jumper each with a spare between them (DTs) as jumpers were mega expensive. Did a midweek
wash for shirts but just sponged shorts/pinafore unless very grubby. They wire overalls for anything messy and school would also get them to remove jumpers.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/08/2022 08:09

There is good advice above - I would also see if anyone is selling second hand uniform if you want to reduce the amount of new stuff you need to buy.

When I was a kid we had one jumper that we wore all week, a couple of pairs of trousers / skirts that we wore 2/3 days each, and a shirt for every day. PE kit one set and washed after wearing (one lesson a week) anything that got actually mucky was spot cleaned and dried overnight. We didn't have a tumble drier so couldn't do a full wash.

DD started school last year and was still chucking dinner down her front every day so she had a set per day, but I think I'll do roughly the above when she's a bit older. Probably 2 jumpers.

I do it with my own clothes - I don't wash jeans or a jumper after one wear. Anything against armpit skin (so shirt/dress/etc) and obvs underwear gets worn once, but everything else is fine to be reworn, I think.

No way i'm washing everyday so we buy enough for the week and wash once on weekends. We always get as much as possible from 2nd hand uniform shop though

worth asking the school whether they are following this new legislation - doesn’t sound like it.

Depends how messy your child is and whether you are able to chuck a wash on midweek.

Ours were in expensive leavers’ hoodies for the last year and I was tight and just bought one. I think I had to wash it midweek once and sponge it twice.
