Why do people on mumsnet know everything?

I've noticed quite a bit on mumsnet that if you mention any person's name in the public eye no matter how little fame they have had someone will have heard of them. Also if you were to start a thread about someone who has not been in the public eye for a quite a few years, there will be be people who say I was just thinking about them the other day.

OP posts:

Because there's a wide range of people on here 🤷

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/08/2022 18:57

It's a hive mind. Every single one of us* can tap into a great cosmic consciousness to reach All The Knowledge.

  • Not you, obviously.
TeenDivided · 16/08/2022 18:57

Because mn has a cross section of women (and some men) of different ages, interests, education etc?

BertieBotts · 16/08/2022 18:59

I don't really understand your question? Why is it unusual to have heard of someone in the public eye? And yes if you were thinking about someone enough to write a thread about them, then it's not unlikely somebody else has been thinking of them too. Thoughts don't just completely happen out of the blue, they are triggered by something else. That trigger is unlikely to be unique to you.

WhackingPhoenix · 16/08/2022 19:04

What a strange observation to make Confused MN members come from all backgrounds and walks of life.

People pop into my head all the time for no reason. For example, I googled Elaine the Pain (from Tracy Beaker) the day before yesterday because she popped into my head and I wanted to see if the actress was still active Grin

If she suddenly hit the news next week I’d think “huh, funny, I just googled her the other day.”

It isn’t that strange at all.

EmmaH2022 · 16/08/2022 19:06

I have a horrible feeling this is one of those posts that completely denies someone can be successful in their field, because the OP hasn't heard of them.

SmileyClare · 16/08/2022 19:07

If you mention a person in the public eye, someone will have heard of them

Of course, that's not just on mumsnet is it? A percentage of the population will have heard of someone in the public eye because well they're in the public eye

Mumsnet has around 7 million users.

Hellocatshome · 16/08/2022 19:07

Because there is a large cross section of people on here. Also because the people likely to comment are the people who are aware of the issue you are talking about. Threads would be rubbish if we all commented "no idea" on the threads we have no idea about.

Batshittery · 16/08/2022 19:09

Do you have any idea how users MN has? Such a strange post Confused

Batshittery · 16/08/2022 19:09

*how many

JaneJeffer · 16/08/2022 19:10

Better than the people who go on a thread to let everyone know they have never heard of someone so therefore nobody else should have either.

godmum56 · 16/08/2022 19:12

because everyone on here knows at least a little bit about something.

creamwitheverything · 16/08/2022 19:16

There are men and women on here aged from 16 to 116 ..well not exactly 116 but you know what I mean! We all live ,work, not work,be mums, grandparents, brothers, sisters,we all do different jobs, live in different places, some married ,some not. some divorced, some having affairs, some gay, some own homes, some rent, some ill ,some fine, some religious, some not, some pure as snow, some with shady pasts..all in all everyone is different but we all live and we all know a little about some things and a lot about different things. It is a good place.Imagine you were stood on a terrace watching the football and you were surrounded by people you had never met but you wanted to know where the loo was ,so you asked joe who was stood next to you,he had no clue as he hadnt been to the ground before,so you ask fred, fred thinks he knows but isnt sure so he says ask jim ,,jim does know exactly so jim tells you ,,,its kind of like that,It is fab cos there is always someone who is around to help, strangers offering kindness, hope, positivity or strangers who will kick you up the bum if you are being daft ! Everyone wants to help each other it is a massive club someone will always know something to answer most questions and everyone is ostly always here to listen,Its a good space

I fear that's what this, and if I'm right, astonishingly poor taste.

last night we had someone who wondered people worked night shifts and thought urine production stopped at night.

StridTheKiller · 16/08/2022 19:18

@DisplayPurposesOnly 😁

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 19:20

Yes, it's the millions of users that does it. It's fun when the name of a sleb comes up and people say they've slept with them. Grin

I not only like but LOVE the cut of your jib!!! Brilliant ! Chuckling away here wiping spat coffee off my keyboard!

Dahlietta · 16/08/2022 19:21

Did you not know who Darius is, OP?

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 19:21

last night we had someone who wondered people worked night shifts and thought urine production stopped at night.

They never did return to their own thread-maybe a disgruntled night shift worker with a bladder problem?
