My neighbours really smell…heeelp

I can see the ridiculousness of my issue BUT the smell is becoming unbearable for me to live with. We are attached on their side so our houses are joined.
The houses are very old- ours is having some renovations done, theirs was done several years ago so they’re not doing any work or anything like that. There is this horrendous stench from their house and I can’t for the life of me understand what it is. They are in their 30s and just had a baby like us, we are friendly. I can tell when their back door is open because I can smell the smell.. I have racked my brains as to the source but I just can’t think what it could be- it is quite a specific type of smell, kind of musty but sweet. Its constant, so not occasionally there- I can smell it any time their doors are open. I don’t think it’s a ‘rotting’ smell but it does make me feel a bit queasy; it’s thick, heavy and smells very very stale. Sort of sweet but not in a nice way. I wondered if they could be cooking with a certain type of oil or a fryer. I’ve never had one so can’t compare. I’ve been into their house before several times and it’s overpowering to me inside - it’s quite dirty (I don’t mean that as in insult) and their kitchen is on our side of the house; I can smell very strongly when she is cooking with her oven and the smell then is like an oven that’s full of grease and never been cleaned. You know when people have ‘their’ smell in their homes - obviously we all do and they are just that - it’s like theirs is really really intense and something is off with it. I don’t know if the smell is related to the oven; i have mentioned to her before that I can smell her oven and she did try and improve that but I just am at my wits end with it & don’t know what to do! I have these horrible thoughts we’ll all be on a Netflix doc in 20 years talking about something very sinister!!!! Heeeelp. Anyone have any similar stories or manky smells? Should I say something? What would you do?

Hello everyone who is still interested in my Sniffestigation 😂 UPDATE! Went for a doggie walk yesterday with my other neighbour (we are three houses in a row, I am in middle house) so house 1 has the smell, I am house 2, and this is my neighbour from house three - who is a childminder and minds baby from house 1!
So we are walking and I bring up the smell.. she can smell it aswell and she says (get your french accents ready - I am in france btw)… “OUI! FRITES!!” So she says it’s a chip fryer. She told me the baby’s clothing reeks of it… ok so no major update but still maybe a clue!!! Xx

That's quite odd if it's that bad on opening a door. That baby is gonna be massive 🤣

I worked with a guy and he smelled of the fry he had every morning before work.

Is it bakhoor? Its a type of arab perfume/incense that are wood chips soaked in oil and gently heated for perfuming a house. Its very sweet but quite woody/stale (I'm arab and all my friends have it) but it can be an acquired smell esp if you arent used to it.

Everyone who I know that makes jam also smokes weed.

That's why we don't have a chip fryer. Hated stinking like a chip fryer when I worked in a kitchen. Love our air fryer though.😉

I love the smell of weed. Know im rare - neighbour smokes it and I will sniff the air

I work with a lot of good living, fitness people who don't drink but enjoy a few spliffs here and there so could well be weed!

I know what smell you mean. It's a dirty unwashed smell. I've been in a few houses (a couple of childhood friends' homes), that had the same smell. It does smell sweet, but odd. It can be over-powering. It's something to do with things not being cleaned properly. Grime. Only way I can explain how their houses smelled the same. It's a particular smell.

I can say its 100% weed, Im the same my downstairs neighbour is a prolific weed smoker, as soon as they open the windows it stinks! but not of weed, its a earthy musty smell, like everyone says here like a mix between earthy smell and B.O. but its deffo the weed that they have been smoking the night before and the smells just getting out in the morning when they open the windows. The smell of weed is different when its been smoked and lingers, compared to someone who's either smoking it next to you or just very recently smoked it.
