To message my boss when he’s on leave?

Hey,

I am feeling pretty rotten with tonsillitis and an ear infection. I want to take tomorrow off to recover and hopefully finally get some rest without it being so hot.

I have never called in sick before so I’m not sure what the protocol is. I’d assume a call or message to my line manager. My line manager is on annual leave however, and the next person on the rung of seniority is the director of the whole organisation. No HR.

Is it okay for me to contact my boss who is on holiday?

Sorry if this sounds silly! I may be over thinking it as I have social anxiety disorder…

Thank you

Some places may require a phone call. Where I work absolutely does not.

I would email my boss, and the person covering for them, and anyone else impacted, letting them know what arrangements I had made for any cover which would be required.

We are all adults who only take time off when really needed so are trusted to make that judgement and ensue that anyone necessary would be informed.

If there were an emergency, the people set up as my ICE contacts would be advised. In any other circumstance, a calm email is all that is required. .

He's not too important to be bothered by it if the alternative is you not following procedure.

Call him and leave a message if he doesn't answer. Explain you're calling because your boss is off and you're not sure who else to contact - unless there are other managers on the same level as your manager.

I used to work in a situation like that, it would have been ridiculous for me to have told the director I was off sick. He would have had no clue what to do with that informaton and would have probably thought I'd messaged the wrong person. Nothing to do with being too important, just they way it was
Not all workplaces are the same you know

I was never off sick while I was there but if I had been I would have let one of the other managers know

Whoever your manager said was dealing with stuff in their absence. Tell them first thing tomorrow.

Sorted.

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair which is exactly what I've suggested - if there's another manager to report to.

And if there's not she has a procedure to follow so she'd have to report it to him.

And call not message - to cancel out any confusion like you've suggested.
