Where have all the big potatoes gone?

AIBU to think there is a mass, large potato shortage!?

Once a week we have baked potato night at home. There is a toppings bar, it's a hoot.

For the past 4-5 months I have not for the life of me been able to find nice, large baking potatoes anywhere. I like the ones the size of my head.

I've been to different shops, in different areas and nothing

The only offerings are tiny, 8 year olds palm sized potatoes.

Is there a national shortage? Have I just been unlucky every time I've gone in any supermarket within a 20 mile radius of my home and elsewhere (I even looked when visiting family in Southampton the other week and same issue there!)

Have you been living under a rock? Exceptionally dry farming conditions equals smaller yields and crops.....

megletthesecond · 14/08/2022 12:58

There probably is a shortage. We've been low on rain for months.

Narcheska · 14/08/2022 12:58

I’ve been noticing it for a while. Even the packets of “baking potatoes” are just smallish now. I remember as a kid we’d get one large potato and a bunch of different fillings then some salad and you’d feel properly full.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/08/2022 12:59

lack of rain- crops aren’t able to
grow to their optimum size atm.

calmlakes · 14/08/2022 13:03

Water is required to grow large potatoes.
There haven't good growing conditions, so that won't help.

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 13:04

This has been national news - potato harvest very poor this year.

Mammyloveswine · 14/08/2022 13:07

"It's a hoot" Grin sorry op that made me laugh!

I do enjoy a decent jacket potato tho!

jammiewhammie65 · 14/08/2022 13:13

All the goblins have eaten them

Yorkshirepuddingwithsyrupnotgravy · 14/08/2022 13:14

Lots of water needed for a good crop. Dry year = poor harvest and smaller crop = prices go up.🤷‍♀️

Saucery · 14/08/2022 13:14

Mmmmm, Toppings Bar…..sounds fab!

Chooksnroses · 14/08/2022 13:17

They're in Waitrose near me...

According to another poster It was in the national news and I missed it so maybe I have been living under a rock

With tiny potatoes

Waitrose near me has tiny potatoes. Local farm shop has massive potatoes but they added a £4 watermelon onto my bill that I hadn’t even bought so I’ve fallen out with them. Might have to go back for a filling potatoey meal though.

Em308 · 14/08/2022 13:24

Fancy a jacket spud now, just saying….

Well the drought has been national news so I think it’s not much to a stretch to realise that potato and other crops will be effected.

Same here

Might need to be a deviant and pop one in the oven for lunch... not on potato night Halo

Just do 3 small ones and have different toppings as well.

GettinPiggyWithIt · 14/08/2022 13:30

I want to hear more about the hoot of a toppings bar

what are the options? Fond of a baked spud myself

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 14/08/2022 13:30

And this is the seasonal food gap.

We are all going to have to get used to more seasonal eating. The quicker we make the mental shift and accept that the better.

MissPoldark · 14/08/2022 13:31

Doesn’t have to be a massive potato though does it? Bonus is that smaller potatoes use less energy to bake too!

sugarspiceplumfairy · 14/08/2022 13:34

I agree op!!!

it’s devastating

i am also interested in the toppings bar..

Riapia · 14/08/2022 13:37
