Is it me or are flies REALLY aggressive this summer?

is there a mad-fly disease doing the rounds or something? Flies literally flying at my face/mouth whilst I’m trying to eat and one was chasing me whilst I was doing the hoovering. I’m sure they are not normally as aggressive as this?

Yes, they seem to be more prevalent than wasps this year!

gracedentssketty · 14/08/2022 12:48

Yes I’ve hardly seen any wasps! We have one of those electric swatters but they are just impossible to catch

Loads of fruit flies here, and the horse flies are v numerous and more determined to bite. Dd and I were chased by a swarm of horse flies a couple of weeks ago.

Notanotherwindow · 14/08/2022 12:50

They are really bad this year. Although they become somewhat more reasonable when a can of Raid appears. I think they must be able to smell it because 90% of the time I don't even have to spray it, they just seem to decide that discretion is the better part of valour and disappear.

gracedentssketty · 14/08/2022 12:51

I need Raid

urgh horse fly bites are horrid.

a fly just buzzed right next to my ear. Bastard.

They are practically swarming round here.

Last night, I cooked some fish and rinsed out the package and left it on the draining board to be put in the recycling. There was one fly in the kitchen so I left the window open for it to hopefully find its way out. Went back into the kitchen after eating and obviously hadn't rinsed the package well enough - kitchen was full of flies buzzing around and there were about 20 or so sitting on the package itself attracted by the faint fish smell.

It's what I imagine a crime scene with a body that's been left for days would probably be like 🤢

Fortunately, taking the package outside lured all the flies outside too otherwise I don't know what I would've done to get them out!

CrotchetyQuaver · 14/08/2022 12:55

I think it must be the heat..,

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/08/2022 12:55

I've just been watching one in the kitchen, they are thick as shit. You'd think once it's head butted the window, it would realise that no matter how many times it does it, nothing will change, it won't get out.

Use the door that's wide open next to the window, you daft buzzy little fucker!

jammiewhammie65 · 14/08/2022 13:27

Must be climate change

Coastalcreeksider · 14/08/2022 13:36

It's horrible in my house, the flies keep coming in and landing on the cat, as he's quite fluffy, he doesn't feel them but if I flap my hands to get rid of them he goes mad as it frightens him.

I even have to stand over him when he eats as they are landing on his bowl!

It's never been this bad before, bloody things!😡

choosername1234 · 14/08/2022 13:37

Yes! I was woken from a lovely afternoon nap by a persistent fly head butting me. Not cool

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/08/2022 14:39

Flies used to be a problem, until a false widow took residence in my kitchen window, even less when another one took up residence in my toaster. I do not like these spiders because of their abdomen shape, but I like the lack of flies.
There is a certain type if fly that flies in geometric patterns in a small space usually under a light fitting, they annoy the piss out if me because it seems once they've flown in the window they lack the capacity to fly away.

CarlaH · 14/08/2022 14:42

Has there been a flying ant day this year.

itsgettingweird · 14/08/2022 15:06

Not yet!

We had an odd few each time we've had the really muggy heatwave days and I've expected them to hatch.

IIRC they usually come early September?

BMW6 · 14/08/2022 15:12

For some reason they are gathering in my utility room every day. I have checked and there is nothing of any obvious interest to them!

They must be coming in the open door, then batting against the closed windows to get out again (though the door inches away is still wide open 🙄)

Stupid fuckers

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 14/08/2022 15:14

Had a big fat bluebottle on the wall watching me butter toast this morning. Thought ill get that out in a minute, then it just lunged at my face for no reason and got stuck behind my glasses!! Awful experience.

FOJN · 14/08/2022 15:15

I'm finding the opposite this year. Most years they gather on my kitchen window but this year there have been hardly any

Ellyfinsmum · 14/08/2022 15:16

I’m sure pretty much every wasp in the UK is at center parcs in Sherwood Forest. We were there last week and there were thousands of them everywhere, literally couldn’t eat outside anywhere without them all flying at you. Haven’t seen them anywhere else this summer! But yes loads of flies here.

FuncaMunca · 14/08/2022 15:19

Agreed! We've had to buy all sorts of bug killing devices it's awful

SilverOverEverything · 14/08/2022 15:21

There was a huge fly at work flying at me and generally being a nuisance, not a blue bottle but a massive fly. I need to Google how many different species of fly there are as this one seemed a bit brighter than average and was determined to piss me off, no banging against the window, it was acting like Johnny Rock!

Wheretheskyisblue · 14/08/2022 15:23

gracedentssketty · 14/08/2022 12:48

Opposite where we are in the SE, loads of wasps and no flies at all.

SilverOverEverything · 14/08/2022 15:25

Well that was easy enough to find, apparently there are over 7,000 species of fly 😯

This was like the one bothering me! Looks like it’s wearing clogs too!

ihatethecold · 14/08/2022 15:36

Flying ant day was about 6 weeks ago.

FinallyHere · 14/08/2022 15:39

We have fly screens up at any open window. Replaced the secondary doubly glazing with fly screen inserts.

Game changer.
