Will I die in a car accident?

blinkandfbreath · 13/08/2022 18:50

How likely is it to die in a car crash? I have a fear of dying and every day I see a new article about someone dying or being seriously injured in a car accident. Every time I get in a car journey I feel like this might be my last moments of being alive.

OP posts:
JanglyBeads · 13/08/2022 18:51

Are you suffering from anxiety, OP?

Getting into a car is one of the many (low
level risks) most of us take every day of our lives.

moita · 13/08/2022 18:52

Are you getting help for this OP? It must be all-consuming

Onandupw · 13/08/2022 18:53

I have the same fear OP (one of the many gifts from my mother trying to limit me). It’s an absolute fucker.

satistcally is is very very unlikely.

I am about to finally get a car and I’m just making sure it’s the highest possible safety rating 🤷‍♀️

TeapotTitties · 13/08/2022 18:54

You could do, so could I and so could anyone who posts on this thread.

However, the thought is obviously making you anxious so it sounds as though you need to see a professional.

AllFreeOwls · 13/08/2022 18:54

Millions of car journeys are made every day. You only hear about the miniscule number that go wrong. Try and focus on the 99.99999999999999999999999999999+% that are completed with no issues.

Mamamia7962 · 13/08/2022 18:56

You have a less than 1% chance of dying in a car crash.

Pluvia · 13/08/2022 18:57

Around 1850 people die on the roads in the UK each year.

Around 6000 people die due to accidents un the home each year.

www.rospa.com/home-safety/advice/general/facts-and-figures

Obviously lots of variables based on age and health, but you may be safer in a car than at home.

moostermum · 13/08/2022 18:57

I also have this fear especially when someone else is driving.

Jojobees · 13/08/2022 18:59

There are 67 million adults in the UK, and in 2020 1560 died in a car accident. That is 0.0023% chance of dying in a car accident.

Kanaloa · 13/08/2022 18:59

I mean you might. You also might get hit by a car crossing the road. Or fall down the stairs and die, or die from an illness or disease. I always think the best thing with fear is to accept in your mind that it might happen. It’s a tiny risk, one that you can make even tinier with some small measures such as regular car maintenance and careful driving, but it’s possible. And a million other dangerous things are also possible - life is a risk.

Mamamia7962 · 13/08/2022 19:04

Also just to add OP, you are consciously looking for these articles on car crashes because of your fear which is not helping. It's like a never ending cycle. You're scared of dying in a car crash so you are hyper vigilant of any news stories about crashes. This then makes your fear worse and so you become even more hyper vigilant and so on.

I think therapy would help so you can break the cycle.

There were a lower number of road deaths in 2020 because of lockdown: somewhere around 1800 is more accurate. Still a very low percentage chance though/

Goingforarun · 13/08/2022 20:13

Most accidental deaths are at home in the kitchen.

PollyRockets · 13/08/2022 20:15

You seriously need therapy

Puppypads · 13/08/2022 20:22

@Jojobees the entire population of the UK is 67m. 80% (approx) is over the age of 14.
However being an adult over the age of 65, or a child under the age of 10, has a statistically higher chance of dying in a car accident than average. road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu/statistics-and-analysis/statistics-and-analysis-archive/pedestrians/age-groups-most-involved-fatal-crashes_en

Hbh17 · 13/08/2022 20:23

Well, it's possible but unlikely. But - more to the point - why are you frightened of death? There is nothing bad about it & it's simply an end of any fear, pain or suffering. Actually, a car accident would be a good way to go if death was instant or quick.

You seriously need therapy

And you're seriously unkind and unhelpful.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 13/08/2022 20:30

I have a similar death anxiety but mine is cancer...I am terrified of it and i know its a case of when not if for me.

Goingforarun · 13/08/2022 20:13

Most accidental deaths are at home in the kitchen.

Actually, if you look at ROSPA's facts, the most dangerous room is the living room.

PollyRockets · 13/08/2022 20:31

@FredandFloReadyToGo

Do you not think the OP could do with some help with this severe anxiety she is suffering with?

How odd to not want the best for people

You don't know you'll develop, let alone die of, cancer. One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime but a smaller number will die of it. My mum had breast cancer and later bowel cancer but eventually died of something else. A lot of elderly men, including my father-in-law, have prostate cancer when they die of something else.

Do some research and then have a few therapy sessions to set yourself free of this fear.

Not how you phrased it - in a kind positive way - and you know that. How odd to want to kick someone while their down.

OP, try CBT - it was a game changer for me.

Afterfire · 13/08/2022 21:15

I have this anxiety. I tell myself there are xxxxx millions of people in the U.K. and most will not die in a car accident. So statistically I have a good chance of it not happening to me.

I also worry about choking and dying of a heart attack.

I spend my life worrying. I’ve had counselling and done CBT and nothing helps. I just try to push it down every day. It’s hard.

OhGoodnessItsSoExhausting · 13/08/2022 21:19

Stats show there are 1.46 deaths per 100 million miles driven. That means the odds are extremely low that you will die in a car accident.

I drive for over 4 hours a day, every single day and am not expecting to die in a car accident.

SusanKennedy · 13/08/2022 21:43

Op there is absolute 100% certainty you will die. Be it a car accident, cancer, heart attack, a freak accident or old age.

I suffer from anxiety too so I know what it's like to zoom focus on one thing and get worked up over it, have you sought any sort of therapy? Flowers
