Anyone remember this song by Inspiral carpets? I was only a kid then, but wondered if this is how my mum felt…

I can understand the feelings in this song, being a mother etc…anyone else?

Yes! I often have the lyrics running through my head now I seem to be menopausal!

Greytodayinnit · 13/08/2022 18:26

@3totheright4totheleft Yes 😅think I’m possibly peri and have been remembering it a lot recently, usually when I’m washing dishes and looking out of the window.

I looked it up recently, so,etching must have jogged my memory. Loved this song.

I always thought it was about depression. The next verse is about ‘some man from the top estate’ who commits suicide

Tree543 · 13/08/2022 18:31

I remember it from when I was a teenager. Heard it again recently and it really struck me how depressing the lyrics were.

SaskiaRembrandt · 13/08/2022 18:35

I always thought it was about depression, and how isolating mental illness can be.

SecretVictoria · 13/08/2022 18:35

One of my favourite songs. The lyrics to the second verse were changed at the request of Railtrack/Network Rail. Original was: “There’s a funeral in town today, some guy from the top estate, seems they found him under a train and yet he had it all on a plate.”

New version is: “Black car drives through the town/Some guy from the top estate/left a note for a local girl/yet he had it all on a plate.”

It really captures the essence of loneliness and depression.

I loved that song & the album it came from - I was about 18 when it came out.

’this is how it feels to be lonely, this is how it feels to be small …’

i was in to depressing music at that time, more so than now I’m peri.

Yes, I think it’s about depression and loneliness

Carter USM did a good cover. Inspirals are one of Jimbob's favourite bands iirc

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 13/08/2022 18:55

Yes.
Always thought that verse was a description of pnd having gone through it.

I remember it from then and now I can 'understand 'it.
