Difficult summer with pre-teens

I don't like complaining about my DC but my God I am finding the summer with them so hard. There are four of them aged from 9 to 14 so I suppose it is to be expected that hormones are kicking in. There doesn't seem to a single moment where at least one of them isn't in a sulk with me over something or other, and I'm just finding the constant negativity so draining. Trying to get them to help out with housework nearly always results in arguments and moaning. I know a certain amount of grumpiness is to be expected and I know hormones can be tough, but would it really be that difficult to just empty the dishwasher or bring in clothes from the line without sulking and whinging??? Are other DC like this or are mine particularly bad? The worst of the four of them is my 11 year old DS. Is this a difficult stage for boys?
