*Gross pic* To not book a GP appointment?

I have a mild sore throat which came on quite quickly today. Looked at the back of my throat with a torch and it’s pretty nasty.

Sent the picture to my mother and a friend both are insisting I ought to go to the GP tomorrow. But, if I’m not in pain should I bother? GPs are over stretched enough as it is imo and I know they are reluctant to prescribe antibiotics.

Call 111, they can do a video call or look at pictures you send. Not sure if they can prescribe but should be able to get you an appointment sooner than the gp.

You need to see your gp!

SoSoSusan · 12/08/2022 00:23

Most bacterial throat infections clear up in a few days even without antibiotics.

I get recurrent tonsillitis. I only call the GP if I'm in fairly significant pain.

In your case if it's just mildly sore I wouldn't bother the GP. I'd gargle with salt water several times a day, drink plenty of water and take a high dose vit c supplement daily, plus paracetamol if needed...this is my go to. I'd contact the GP if it progresses to pain or you get a temperature.

That looks like tonsillitis to me! Sad poor you op, might need some penicillin x

TeapotTitties · 12/08/2022 00:50

I don't know where you live but you'd be lucky to get a GP appointment around here within 2 or 3 weeks.

If you really can get one tomorrow I would, because otherwise you may end up in Out of Hours over the weekend.

Lindy2 · 12/08/2022 00:55

If it's only mildly sore it seems like it looks worse than it is.

I'd do some gargling with water with a bit of TCP in it and suck some lozenges. If it gets more painful or swollen perhaps a pharmacist could advise.

Oinkypig · 12/08/2022 00:56

Agree with a pp, quite often on here people declare white spots on tonsils as bacterial and therefore needing AB when regardless of the cause most tonsillitis clears up by itself and Even if it is bacterial AB only reduce the length of the illness by one day. If you’re feeling fine ish in yourself the tonsils are doing the job they are meant to! Keep an eye on it obviously but the body is designed to fight infections (antibiotics are a wonderful thing when needed though)

PeloAddict · 12/08/2022 01:00

That looks like my throat a couple of months ago and I needed 2 courses of antibiotics
Let the GP have a look

crazeekat · 12/08/2022 01:06

Looks like tonsillitis, and when mine was as bad as that I got antibiotics. Your pic is very clear so phone them and send that actual pic to them via email, they can see clearly what the problem is and will tell u ur options.

GlamGiraffe · 12/08/2022 01:06

It looks similar to the fungal infection my husband had on his tonsils rather than standard tonsillitis. It was a pest to get Rid of. Needless to say it neded GP treatment after it eventually started to make him feel grotty. Make an appointment.

CactusBlossom · 12/08/2022 03:22

See your pharmacist; they might be able to give you something or recommend you see your GP. If problems, call NHS 111.

WoundTheBobbinUp · 12/08/2022 03:30

I've just recovered from tonsillitis. It escalated very quickly, and I was glad that I spoke to the GP when I first saw the white patches and wasn't in much pain! Give them a call. Hope you escape with a mild case of whatever it is!

Onlyrainbows · 12/08/2022 05:17

I once had tonsillitis that escalated very quickly, ended up with 40+ fever and hallucinations. I wouldn't risk it

Tanfastic · 12/08/2022 06:39

I'm struggling with this as whenever I've had tonsillitis I've been in horrendous pain with my throat. Felt terrible and had a raging temperature. Worse than any covid I've had.

If you aren't in much pain then and feel well in yourself it doesn't sound like tonsillitis.

However it does look like it!
