Abrreviations!

Im fairly new to Mumsnet but I find the constant use of abbreviations really irritating. I have to give up on some threads because I can't work out what the abbreviations mean or decode the meaning incorrectly. Yesterday was a classic I mistook DD (direct debit) for DD (dear daughter). Isn't it just easier to write, daughter, son, Dad, Mum?

Tbh, imo YABTU.

clickychicky · 10/08/2022 09:08

I what context did you mistake someone talking about a direct debit with someone talking about their daughter?

Abbreviations list: www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms HTH

If you take some time to have a look around the site, there’s a whole page explaining DSS =dear step son. Dgc = dear grandchildren etc.
its really not that difficult once you get used to it. You don’t struggle with ASAP or etc because you’ve learned them, once you know you don’t forget, just like riding a bike op.

YABVU - these abbreviations and acronyms have been around since long before MN, they're standard on many forums and have been forever.

https://www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms is a list which will help. You'll get the hang of it quickly, and even unfamiliar terms can usually be guessed from context.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 10/08/2022 09:16

To be fair there was a really confusing one yesterday but I suspect that would have been the same even if he had used full words.

Brahumbug · 10/08/2022 09:16

I saw the direct debit one as well!😁. You are right, the acronyms and abbreviations are beyond annoying.

CounsellorTroi · 10/08/2022 09:23

GP is one that often confuses me. My default assumption is that it stands for General Practitioner but it can also mean grandparents or guinea pig!

Lorrymum · 10/08/2022 09:24

There are over a hundred listed abbreviations and acronyms!

Yeah they’re annoying. If give up on threads that have too many because I have to constantly translate them into real words in my head.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 10/08/2022 09:39

The whole interest uses abbreviations, that's just the way it is

Bit strange though to join a very long established website and expect everyone to change for you

Yeezytiger · 10/08/2022 10:00

I hate them too especially when they use the same one for different things like df

Yeezytiger · 10/08/2022 10:02

And bf

SatinHeart · 10/08/2022 10:05

It's not just Mumsnet, all forums have their own style, language, etiquette, that's just the way it is. Yes its confusing at the start, but people soon get the hang of it (or I assume they move on).

Isn't it just easier to write, daughter, son, Dad, Mum?

Actually no, the abbreviations save loads of time if you are writing a fairly detailed post.

Lorrymum · 10/08/2022 11:33

I didn't join and expect everyone to change for me. Just expressing an opinion. I really don't do "my way or no way at all'
Thank you.
