Blown plaster-tenancy

Hi, we've recently moved into a privately rented house, it's in dire need of redecorating as there is mould in most rooms, which we've been told was caused by previous tenants not ventilating the house properly. The landlord said he was happy for us to strip wallpaper and redecorate. We've started in a couple of rooms but the plaster in one room has blown, as we've removed the paper it's taken off chunks of plaster with it in some areas and the wall is soft, we can actually feel the wall moving when we put our hand on it. We couldn't leave the paper on as their was several layers of paper that had also been painted over between layers so the paper was lifting off in most area's and had grown mould underneath. This room will be for our DD. My question is aibu to to think this is the landlords responsibility for repairs or can he claim the damage was caused by us removing the paper so we would be liable for repairs?

Definitely LL responsibility to fix, needs expert assessment and repair as not cosmetic

Definitely landlords this is why they have insurance !

Agree this is LL responsibility!! They should be redecorating aswell tbh! Makes me angry that they obviously knew it needed work and just went ahead and took your rent anyway. Do you have an estate agent? I would grt them or LL round and show the work that needs doing. I hope at the very very least you are paying less rent than market rate or that you are getting some sort of reduction for the work you are doing!! X

Thanks all, I did think it would be the landlords responsibility but wanted to double check, before I raised it with him. I've already had someone out to repair things on day 2 that they've not done before we got the keys, I'm sure they hate us now 🙈

The rent is cheaper then the usual houses around this area, we've been waiting ages for a house to come up in this area that's big enough for us all and local to the kids school. I'm sure once all the decorating is done it will look nice but there's just so much to do it's overwhelming 😫
