Someone I know had a heart attack while playing tennis.Someone else was telling me their friend died while playing football last month.
It got me thinking is physical exercise good for you or dangerous?

In general not exercising at all is more dangerous than smoking.
Deaths like that will be due to some sort of underlying medical reason.

Whattodoaboutworknow · 09/08/2022 21:43

This is like asking if eating vegetables is dangerous because someone once choked on a brocolli.

Do you know how dangerous it is to sit on your arse all your life and be sedentary? Very!

PurpleMarie · 09/08/2022 21:43

WTF?!?

Jesus wept. People here are so dumb.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 09/08/2022 21:43

How many people die relatively young each year who do no exercise - I don't have the stats but guessing that's considerably higher.

DSGR · 09/08/2022 21:44

thousands of studies have shown exercise extends your life and keeps your heart healthy. The people you reference are the anomalies

dementedpixie · 09/08/2022 21:44

Sounds to me like they had underlying conditions that were brought out during exercise, not that exercise itself was the cause.

DillonPanthersTexas · 09/08/2022 21:45

In a very strong field this is quite possibly one of the most stupid things I have read on here.

Maireas · 09/08/2022 21:45

Do you mean sport or exercise?
I've never played any sport (shudder) but I'm active.

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 09/08/2022 21:45

Assuming you are actually asking a serious question.
Life in general is a dangerous business. Over-exertion can kill you, lying on a couch stuffing you face with pizza can kill you.
You can develop a life threatening allergy at any point to almost anything.
But to answer directly, physical exercise is generally a good thing, yes. It generally helps to promote longevity, but obviously there exceptions.
We all die in the end. Just wait.

NotASecret · 09/08/2022 21:46

Yes, it's fatal. I can't believe they let the Commonwealth Games go ahead, the heartless bastards.

SizzlerFizzler · 09/08/2022 21:46

This is the kind of question I'd imagine some be-whiskered old academic gentleman to ask in 1827 when rugby football had just taken off.

Yes, exercise is good for you!

Circumferences · 09/08/2022 21:46

These people probably didn't do enough exercise, that's why one game of football or tennis was too much for them...

Moonface123 · 09/08/2022 21:47

It suits some people to believe exercise is dangerous, gives them a excuse as to not to do it.

Scianel · 09/08/2022 21:58

Unfortunately people who are underactive are in for a very difficult time as they age and lose muscle mass, as well.

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/08/2022 22:05

Have you really missed 40 years’ worth of public health information campaigns?

I’m not being nasty I just can’t see how anyone could have missed this.

SimonaRazowska · 09/08/2022 22:10

I know someone who had a heart attack playing tennis

He was very overweight. You could wonder if the cause was tennis or his weight ...

Doing sport with that kind of intensity when you are obese is often Ill advised, most coaches or trainers would suggest a few months/years of gentle exercise first such as walking/swimming until you loose more weight and have better fitness

Tennis can be quite full on, especially if you are competitive

Hope your friend/acquaintance is ok OP

Tennis is awesome but you have to build it up slowly and sensibly

Vallmo47 · 09/08/2022 22:12

Wow.

Sartre · 09/08/2022 22:12

Yep, believe it or not exercising is actually good for you and being obese isn’t! WHO’s have thought it?

echt · 09/08/2022 22:17

Exercise is good for your brain, too.

The Nun Study found a correlation between exercise and dementa:

So your anecdata trumps years and years of research?

UmbilicusProfundus · 09/08/2022 22:21

“It got me thinking”

Pleaae be careful.

Changechangychange · 09/08/2022 22:22

I know multiple people who have fallen down the stairs, and yet outrageously, in this country we are still building two-storey homes.

Furthermore, my downstairs neighbour tripped on a kerb (to be fair she was quite drunk). And yet people still leave the house and walk on pavements.

Life is unbelievably dangerous OP, best you take to your bed for the next 40 years.

birdfeeders · 09/08/2022 22:22

Yes OP, sit on your arse watching telly and thank God you're not doing anything risky, like finding a passion for sport, or enjoying fresh air

Discovereads · 09/08/2022 22:23

Circumferences · 09/08/2022 21:46

These people probably didn't do enough exercise, that's why one game of football or tennis was too much for them...

Or they were on steroids…
Or they had undiagnosed heart murmurs

PriamFarrl · 09/08/2022 22:24

And what about all the people who exercise and don’t drop dead?
