I've been out and about a bit in our local town the last 2 days and have really noticed a lot of stress out there on the street this summer hols. A couple of parents ready to loose it with their kids, couples having arguments in supermarket carparks. Many people look bloody miserable like they are struggling with their families and kids.

AIBU to think the economic issues plus 2 years of pandemic has really piled the pressure of survival on a lot of people to the extent they are finding family life really difficult?

I dunno but I can relate to this. Son has special needs and I'm on tenterhooks all summer holidays.

XenoBitch · 09/08/2022 20:59

Sounds like a normal summer holiday.

HailAdrian · 09/08/2022 21:00

It's somewhat reassuring to know that I'm not alone though 😬

blubberball · 09/08/2022 21:02

I find this happens every summer. Usually around 3pm for some reason.

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2022 21:02

That and I think the heat is adding to peoples stress.

If people are in hot houses then they probably aren't sleeping properly.

Orangesare · 09/08/2022 21:07

It’s probably stress. We’ve not had normal for a couple of years now. Pandemic just about over and straight into economic and energy crisis, weather is unusually hot, and the headlines are constantly fearmongering
most of us will be ok but it’s just stressful

Joanajoanna · 09/08/2022 21:12

I'm stressed to my eyeballs and have no idea how I'll get to the end of the year without either starting medication or taking a stint of sick leave. But bills. And I'm a lone parent.

MarshaMelrose · 09/08/2022 21:14

Nah. Summer holidays, innit.

SexyHoneyMoony · 09/08/2022 21:16

It's so hot, everything is too expensive or crowded or both and we are bored shitless. I hate summer so much.

RainyDays22 · 09/08/2022 21:16

I think it's the heat. I'm not stressed if that helps.

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2022 21:18

It's really hot and no sign of any rain.
The ones with school age children are probably juggling childcare and work
Bills are going up by the day
The news is grim , especially about droughts and higher energy bills.
The roads are awful , pot holes and aggressive drivers.
Work is stressful and many haven't had a pay rise in years.
Going anywhere is usually difficult / expensive hassle.

TheIsaacs · 09/08/2022 21:23

Absolutely. Plus hot weather is known to exacerbate cases of rudeness and aggression.

I’m ashamed to say I was rather grumpy with some people in town over the weekend. It was absolutely heaving with people and a small gaggle of people were stood right in the middle of the path gossiping. They didn’t notice all the people trying to squeeze past and I said ended up saying very loudly, “please move! That’s a bloody stupid place to stand” they looked at me agog. I feel bad about it now, but on Sunday I was hot, tired and fed up being jostled. I’ve been stressed at work, am stressed about an upcoming family event. It’s no excuse but I think generally people’s stress levels are higher.

ASatisfyingThump · 09/08/2022 21:24

Nah. Summer holidays, innit.

This. If you'd been in the shop with me today, you would have seen me snap at both my kids for fairly normal kid behaviour. I'm just sick to death of listening to them all day every day, while knowing I'm getting behind on work because I can't get more than five minutes of quiet to concentrate. It's just the holidays, I'll feel far less stressed once they go back to school, as I imagine most parents will.

Yep I'm with you

Sunnyqueen · 09/08/2022 21:33

I think its a lot of factors, cost of living, holidays etc. I find it a bit odd personally I absolutely love the holidays its so much easier than the all the term time bullshit (school runs, washing and ironing uniforms constantly, homework, a million school emails a day etc) and we are having fantastic weather this year so yeah i'm more chilled and relaxed than ever right now.

Summerlols · 09/08/2022 21:38

I am pretty chilled in general with the kids. It's their dad that winds me up! We are separated but I have to deal with him much more in the holidays as we share care more. I fantasise that one year we won't have any contact with him.

Your kids may not share that fantasy.

QuietBatperson15 · 09/08/2022 21:42

definitely witching hour

Same! Solidarity 💪

Its definitely the summer holidays and lack of help / childcare / support for SEN children causing my stress. I’ve aged about 10 years these last 2.2 weeks, I’m exhausted and so stressed I can barely think straight. Just another 3.8 weeks to go …

XenoBitch · 09/08/2022 20:59

Yep. I was thinking of selling my kids to the highest bidder!

KangarooKenny · 09/08/2022 21:45

My DS is counting down the days to going back to college. He likes the routine.

No I don't think they do 😬

MN’s very rude this week.

Goldi321 · 09/08/2022 22:38

We have lovely weather (that people pay a fortune to fly to get to!), kids off school, but no one can enjoy it because of the fear of how grim this winter is about to be.
