Can someone please talk to me about bastard chickenpox or whatever the hell this is?!

So my son started with what we thought was chickenpox about a week and a half ago. He had a few spots on his legs and upper arms and scalp/ears. They looked exactly right for CP and the GP agreed.

He got one or two more over the course of the week so thought lucky us he's gotten away with a mild case.

However the past two days (so over a week since the first suspected chickenpox) he's had a rash all over front of his hands and feet and the palms of his hands and soles of his feet. He's been off his food and sleeping poorly and it looks like it's spreading up his lower arms from his hands.

It doesn't look like the CP spots he has. It looks different and I understood new CP spots came up between 3-5 days from the first, not nearly two weeks later so I'm thinking this is something else entirely?!

The 'chickenpox' spots seemed very isolated. Just one on its own dotted around whereas this seems much more 'rash' like (bunched together).

Hand foot and mouth AND chickenpox?! Do I need to contact the GP again do you think? What is this bloody thing?! Next week will be the 3rd week he's had off nursery in a row for whatever this is!

If it is HFM I have no idea where he's got it from as he's only been at home with us/out for short walks once his CP spots were scabbed. He's not been to nursery or soft play or anything like that, he's not been around any kids.

First picture looks exactly like CP, second no, also so much later. Could he be allergic to something or some medication he took?

Sorry to not be much help... bumping for you. CP can be really nasty BTW, DD was hospitalised.

gogohmm · 09/08/2022 08:23

Heat rash? Dd2 used to get that just from a few mins in the sun

Heidi1976 · 09/08/2022 08:24

That looks like H,F&M to me, but with him having had chickenpox recently I'd get it checked out just to make sure it's nothing else.

madrush · 09/08/2022 08:24

My dd used to get a post viral urticaria rash at toddler age. Drs said it was an allergic response to the virus and just resolved on it’s own with time.

WhatIsGoingOnnn · 09/08/2022 08:25

The second picture is what his palms and soles look like too. The 1st picture has only come up in the last couple of days so over a week and a half since the 'CP' started.

I'll attach a picture of what the original CP looked like because it was really isolated, none of the spots were together like this. They just scabbed over within about 5 days and he's been fine since until this.

He's had piriton a few times so maybe it's that, I'm going to send a pic to the doctor I think just in case.

The picture of his foot looks like a viral rash. The first picture does look like chicken pox.
My son a few months ago had hand foot and mouth but also had a viral rash along side it.
I took him to the doctors and he confirmed it and said it could mean he had hand foot and mouth alongside another virus which is causing the other rash. He said the HFM might have lowered his immune system causing the other virus to show in rash form and that it might have been asymptomatic had he not already been ill with HFM.

I'd take him to get looked at again.

whatshouldIdo2022 · 09/08/2022 08:27

2nd pic is exactly like my DD when she had HFM

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 09/08/2022 08:28

Looks like a post viral rash to me. I'd get it checked out with GP personally for reassurance as so long after CP appearing.

WhatIsGoingOnnn · 09/08/2022 08:30

so long after CP appearing

Yes this is what's bugging me. It's so long after the CP started and he hadn't got anymore spots for a while before this started. It was all scabbed up and looking much better.

I'll message the GP. Thanks

When DS had chicken pox, the first doors came out on the Tuesday, about 5 of them, then nothing for a few days, and the last spots on the Thursday of 9 days later! By then he was covered head to to, scalp to the soles of his feet, and generally really quite poorly.

I'm not sure what advice to give, other than to say that IME, CP can take a lot more than 5 days to appear.

Oh wow that's interesting thank you! Everywhere I read said 3-5 days which is why I thought this must be something else! I was ready to send him back to nursery until this just appeared!

First def looks like CP
srcinf could be a viral rash. My DCs got them when young, ds used to get hives (that’s not hives though).

TommySaid · 09/08/2022 09:07

I would definitely contact the gp just incase but as other have said it could be a mixture of CP, HF&M or heat rash.
I don’t think it’s anything serious.

But monkey pox is going around and although it doesn’t look like this from what I’ve seen it is better to be safe than sorry.

I hope he’s feeling ok 💐

YukoandHiro · 09/08/2022 09:08

Looks like chicken pox and hand foot and mouth at the same time. We had them concurrently too. Not fun.

WhatIsGoingOnnn · 09/08/2022 09:10

Thanks. I sent the GP some pics and they've just rang me and asked to see him this morning so will see what they say.

Thankfully have a pretty fab GP surgery when it comes to little ones, they are always happy to see them relatively quickly.

Have u done the glass test to see if it’s possibly meningitis. Just be careful incase of this or sepsis. Get the wee one to GP or phone NHS 24 strait away. Even a&e... keep us up to date and best of luck.

WhatIsGoingOnnn · 09/08/2022 09:15

Yes done glass test and seems to be disappearing thankfully. But he's at the GP shortly anyway so they will test too I'm sure 🙂

Posted too soon!

Doctor now confident it's hand foot and mouth not chickenpox.

They've taken a swab to be sure, they were very thorough with him actually, really impressed with them.

That’s good you have a diagnosis and peace of mind now.
