Dad wants £500

Ds is 16 this month and we wanted to treat him. We decided to get him a PC and my dad said he could build one (he’s been building them for years), so we agreed. We spent £400 on some hard drives and another £250 on a monitor. Initially, Dad said he had bits lying around he could use but said to give him a couple of hundred pounds for other bits. The PC would be from us and my parents. Got a message from Dad yesterday and he’s asking for £500. He’s explained that he’d added everything up that he’s put in it and divided the cost between us, even though some of the parts were laying around in the back of a cupboard. Says he’s had to buy a couple of things, o e of which I know is less than £10. Too late to change our minds now as it’s already built. AIBU to be really pi**ed off? Feel like I’ve been conned by my own parents.

Ha ha you are right. He likes the integrity of gamers nexus. He’s off to watch Tech Yes City …..

He really knows what he’s talking about then!!

Steve from Gamers Nexus is only topped by Guy Pearce (after his fabulous performance in the last episodes of neighbours) on integrity for me 😂

Rathgar · 08/08/2022 21:26

is his name dick turpin

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/08/2022 21:27

We’re big Gamer’s Nexus fans here! If you look at Steve’s background, you can see a 12in square, Perspex plate filled with what looks like copper wires.

That was my FILs; it is an original core memory, its 4096bits from a 1960s NCR machine!

#snowflake is life.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/08/2022 21:34

And I’ve just shown IT consultant DH the parts list; I don’t think anyone would wish for me to repeat the expletives he’s currently uttering.

The clue is in the Windows 10 cost. The CPU was released in 2015 & it’s end of life was 2018. Hence it won’t even run Win 11.

And to have a cost of what, £165 for that?! It’s £20 on eBay, and even then I’d baulk at paying that.

Yeah, top notch gaming machines cost. This is not a top notch gaming PC. Your Dad is an arse.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/08/2022 21:40

DH has made one point. That processor could be used to overclock (and may have a slightly higher value to overclockers) but you’d have to have some pretty meaty cooling to do this, which your parts list doesn’t include.

But then, I’m living with a guy whose gaming machine is water cooled & has a test rig that’s liquid nitrogen cooled & is currently wanting to fiddle with liquid helium cooling…erm…nope.

Then sadly, your DH is wrong. The list does have sufficient cooling to overclock a 6700k. the H100 is adequate.

However, the bigger problem is no matter how much you overclock a 6700k, it’s multi core performance isn’t going to be great for modern games that require more than 4 physical cores. Single threaded as well, the IPC gains since skylake are quite considerable.

SwanBuster · 08/08/2022 21:46

And also, he’s wrong on the windows 10 cost indicating anything. This is the one area that the OPs dad did quite well price wise. A windows 10 license is absolutely usable for Windows 11 - it’s likely an OEM license from somewhere like SCDkeys for that sort of price.

And you can run windows 12 on skylake - you just need to know how to circumvent the check for the TPM module.

I have wasted 35 years of my early 40s life messing with this stuff, so I would hope they look (and work) ok 😁

BabyDreamers · 08/08/2022 22:31

My ex custom made my sons PC we ordered the parts from overclockers and he made it. Cheapest good spec we could do was about £1000 and that's excluding the monitors (son needed 2 for some reason). It is expensive.

FictionalCharacter · 08/08/2022 22:42

OP’s dad is a great example of the fact that doing something for years doesn’t mean you’re that good at it.

CSIblonde · 08/08/2022 23:20

What the heck !? My reconditioned Dell laptop was £120 on Amazon, with aWarranty & Microsoft office etc. Its still going strong 4 years later & still looks brand new.

SwanBuster · 08/08/2022 20:41

That's simple. For the best value/performance option - Mac mini m1 with 16g of RAM and 512 SSD. Attach extra storage via thunderbolt ports.

If you have more money, MacBook Pro 14" with an M1 Pro. You can always connect external peripherals like the monitor/mouse keyboard. I use a Dell 38" monitor with USB-C and a built in kvm and switch between Pc/Mac with a couple of button presses.

The Adobe suite runs better on my Macbook Air M1 with 16gb than on my 64gb ram, RTX 3070, Ryxen 3900x. It's quite dispiriting 😂

Thankyou Swan! Was interested in a laptop option so if you say that’s better then maybe it’s time!

Legend 🙏

EarringsandLipstick · 09/08/2022 07:04

I don’t need,, or want, a PC but reading the posts has made me really want @SwanBuster to build me one

Same!

I didn't understand much of many of the posts here but really enjoyed reading them & seeing posters' knowledge!

Very impressed with your DS 1VY!

OP glad you were able to get good advice here. MN at its best!

Solokidydad · 09/08/2022 07:35

OP looking at those old parts, your father has just funded his own pc upgrade and given you all his old parts or should I say just laying around 😆.

Do not pay him as for receipts and check the components against the receipts.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 09/08/2022 07:53

My DH built a fab one for our DS for about £400 a few years ago. Perfect for gaming and everything else DS wanted. DH now uses it as DS doesn’t want it anymore but it was fab for about 3 years.

NashvilleQueen · 09/08/2022 07:59

I know absolutely nothing about the quality of the components but is it the case that he's adding to the bill the 'parts he had lying around'? My assumption in your position would have been that they weren't costing you anything. I accept he's had to get them from somewhere so perhaps I'm being naive but I would feel like he has managed to palm off some excess stuff and get paid in the process!

It sounds a tricky situation OP.

Yes but that can't run anything more than solitaire without melting.
