Aibu to think grey is a stupid colour for trousers...

Once they hit secondary school.

Supermarkets only seem to go up to age 11/12 in their ranges and any shop that stocks a range that goes from ages 2-16, well they either don't fit because well how can clothes cut for pre pubescent children also fit older kids. I swear m&s trousers haven't been anywhere near an 11 year old...

Inevitably any thing that start at ages 2/3 has bows or hearts or stars or something that is just not suitable for older kids.

And any senior girl trousers which do appear to fit better always seem to be in black.

Rule out poor cuts, elasticated waist/pull ons, babyish details, black.trousers , supermarkets that only go up to age 11/12 Jersey style, and you are left with pretty much precisely nothing.

If I didnt know better id say it was to push us all to wear the expensive skirt 🙄

I'm with you OP. The only thing worse is grey tracksuit bottoms.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/08/2022 13:03

Don't talk to me about grey joggers...

None of your issues appear to be anything to do with the colour..

I think charcoal grey is a fantastic colour - one I'm always seeking for my own clothes (trousers, sweaters, skirts, dresses etc). But pale grey - awful! Pale grey is one of the most unflattering colours, I think, especially (as PP mentioned) when it's tracksuit bottoms. Dark grey looks stunning with burnt orange and lots of other colours.

Didn't realise you were specifically referring to school trousers until I read your post, but I would disagree. I think black shows dirt really badly. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't wear freshly laundered trousers, but every little speck of dust/fluff really shows on black whereas dark grey is much more forgiving.

You need to look outside the supermarkets (speak from bitter experience) to schoolwear suppliers. David Luke and Banner do different styles and sizes including for very tall 15/16 year old girls with no waist and no hips.

We have tried those ones before and they don't fit.we ended up with the pull on skinny fit ones but they won't really be suitable for high school. No one wears pull ons outside of primary.

The colour is the issue as it dramatically rsduces the selection. All senior school ones seem to be black.

Have tried - tesco- dont go up higher than age 11 in the store.

Asda- have previously tried and sent back. Besides one style which is to " young" really now.

Sainsbury- ditto

Morrisons- ditto

Matalan- no grey in the store

Next- limited selection of grey. Have tried and had to send back reasonably recently

M&s- worse cuts ever.

Uniform shop- similar problem to m&s. Loads of excess material in all the wring places and unable to propey bemd knees in them. No good for cycling to school in.

I know what would fit her as they simultaneously fit my older dd really well too. But only available in black

David luke and banner are the ones we tried in the uniform shop.

I will however give those trutex ones a go and order them when I get home ( currently on holiday and attempting to take advantage of what I'd hoped would be a bigger selection in larger stores 😬)

I appear to have given my kids my awkward body shape. Long body, short legs. By the time the trousers go over the arse and thighs they are massive around waist and too long in the leg. Anything that's not a skinny Jean gets frayed and holey at the bottom. But too tall for Petite ranges.

The next senior school black trousers are a perfect fit with no excess material . Would have been my go too of not for the grey requirement 😣

Just turn the trousers up? It's not difficult to hem the legs.
