Hotel Chocolat

DH has been given a load of boxes of this at the end of term (teacher) and, although I'm undoubtedly grateful to have free stashes of chocolate lying around, I'm not feeling the love. I'm not sure I've really had their chocolates before, but the way people rave about it, I'd expected in to be amazing. The flavours are a bit weird and the chocolate tastes a bit odd. Or are my taste buds off?

Glad I didn't get the teacher anything now! 😂😁

KangarooKenny · 07/08/2022 21:06

It’s awful.
Drop it off at the local food bank, someone might be grateful for it.

ilyx · 07/08/2022 21:11

Really??? I love them so much

Blossomtoes · 07/08/2022 21:12

Their rum soaked sultanas are the food of angels. So are their champagne truffles. Mouthfuls of joy.

Jourdain11 · 07/08/2022 21:14

DH absolutely won't regift or donate stuff he receives as presents - he says people spend their money to show appreciation and it's ungrateful to give it away. And I do understand where he's coming from!

I think it's tricky with male teachers - women are more likely to get a pot plant, nice handcream or whatever. Since the alcohol ban DH pretty much gets 30 boxes of chocolates 😂

I like their dark chocolate batons.

ChicagoBears · 07/08/2022 21:20

I think it’s ok chocolate but I neither love nor hate it.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 07/08/2022 21:43

You’re right, it’s awful.

Because I’m a lovely, selfless person with your best interests at heart, I will PM you my address so that you can send it all to me, meaning I can dispose of it for you. Just because I’m lovely like that.

Hollychristmasjoy · 07/08/2022 22:15

I love it.

the hot chocolate is great.

littlepeas · 07/08/2022 22:17

I love it! My favourite is peanut butter and jelly and also the vegan fruit and nut.

Re-gift it if it’s such an issue. Maybe suggest that your husband advise his next class that end-of-year gifts have to be pre-approved by his wife to avoid disappointment next summer.

Lockheart · 07/08/2022 22:45

It was great a few years back. As other posters have said, it has gone the way of Thorntons. I don't dislike it but it has a strange, crumbly, dry-ish sort of texture I don't like and the tastes are becoming very samey.

Unfortunately, because I used to love it, my brother still buys me an Easter egg from there every year and I haven't the heart to tell him I'd much much rather have 10 of the cheap Cadbury ones.

Ooh, okay! Bit snarky, no? I was just wondering if anyone else found the taste of the chocolate disappointing vs the packaging and the brand reputation. Obviously tastes differ and I was surprised not to like it more personally.

It's overrated in my opinion. I also think it tastes strange .

I agree, it's almost a sour taste, if that makes any sense? I was genuinely wondering if my taste buds had gone a bit weird.

I prefer it over most other chocolate brands. I dislike dark chocolate of any type.

hattie43 · 07/08/2022 22:52

@Jourdain11

Haha no your tastebuds are right .
It's just not that nice imo
It's one of those brands that you gift because it's a bit ' posher' but sadly
a lot of us would just prefer Cadbury's , Galaxy etc

Mustthinkofausername · 07/08/2022 22:55

Overpriced and overrated. Shame really as they look so pretty but taste meh.

SausageinaBun · 07/08/2022 22:56

Chocolate manufacturing seems prone to slippery slope decline. I think they make a small, incremental change of a recipe that is pretty much indistinguishable from the previous recipe and are delighted that their margins are better. Then a year later do the same thing, but the comparison is with the current, not the original recipe. So year after year the quality gradually declines until it's truly grim.

I think that's what happened to Thorntons, though I didn't try it until it was horrid. And I think Hotel Chocolat is going the same way.

pedropony76 · 07/08/2022 22:57

I prefer Dairy Milk any day😂

QuietYou · 07/08/2022 22:59

All the teachers I know leave the chocolates, biscuits and best teacher mugs in the staff room for all to share.

The hotel chocolate rum or amaretto sultanas are one of my favourite things. I always ask for them for Christmas.

Friars23 · 07/08/2022 23:00

I don’t like their milk chocolate. Some of the truffles I like, especially cherry deluxe. I like their dark chocolate caramelised almonds and hot chocolate as well.

Oh, he didn't take the whole stash home. But it's a 6-week holiday... and the weather is quite warm 😉
