I’ve just done something so not like me but just felt I had to act

driving home I saw a couple, young girl maybe 18/19 with her boyfriend who looked older, maybe early 20’s having an argument on the street. He was really manhandling her, she was clearly trying to avoid what he was saying to her. Pushing and shouting in her face. I swung the car around and went back. By this time I was on the other side of the road. I put my window down and told him to get the fuck off of her. I told her that if she wanted to get in the car I’d take her somewhere safe. She was sobbing but insisted that she was ok.

I was so bloody mad, he started saying he was sorry (to me not to her - scum bag).

i asked the girl several times if she was ok and if she did want to get in the car - she insisted she didn’t. I drove a bit further up the road, sat & waited. They were walking “normally” by this point.

I didn’t necessarily feel that a 999 was needed but who else can you call to say you are concerned but it’s not an emergency?

WOW! What you did was brilliant OP! You should be proud of yourself, as you probably saved her from a beating. Sadly, she should have got in your car with you, and left the nasty bastard, but as we know from the stories we read on MN, it takes a lot time for abuse to actually sink in, ie that you are being abused. She obviously thinks she loves him at the moment, but I do hope she sees sense before it gets out of hand. In future if I see anything like that going on, I think I'll follow your actions, as by staying in your car, you were keeping yourself fairly safe, but giving the girl a chance to get away if she wanted to. Well done!

You rock. Too many people would ignore this kind of thing. The very fact you were so upset by this will have had an effect. Hopefully it will give her a little of what she needs to get out- if not today, maybe tomorrow.

I was that girl, many years ago- he pushed me onto the bonnet of a police car and even they couldn't be arsed to intervene. I don't think anyone ever did.
