To ask what was so difficult about Sat Nav?

So, we are on holiday in Greece, and weeks ago I booked a rental car with a world-wide company for a few days, making sure I checked the box for a Sat Nat system

But when we went to pick up the car, the Lady Behind the Desk immediately said

“You can just use Google Maps on your phone, its so simple!”

Now, I could have said that we didn’t have a screen mount so we could both see the phone, or I could have said we didn’t have a power cable/supply so we’d be using the battery on my ancient iPhone, and there’s no way that would get us to Fiscardo and back. But all I really said was “We’ll have the booked system please”

“Oh, but its so easy. Let me show you.” Holds out her hands to take my phone

In the end she handed over the system, so it was there but didn’t want to give it to us. Why?

The LBtD did say using our phone would save us money, but this was the same person that later wanted us to upgrade our car, and then it turned out they didn’t have our car anyway and had to upgrade us for free!

If you did not take it she could upsell it to someone else ......

YANBU. Using Google Maps on your phone is a lot more difficult than a built in sat nav.

chipsandpeas · 04/08/2022 19:55

google maps is probably more reliable and updated than some sat navs

SalviaOfficinalis · 04/08/2022 19:56

Maybe they’d had more sat navs booked out than they had available so they would have to cancel someone’s sat nav booking at some point unless they could get someone (you) to voluntarily not take it.

Ridiculous though, you’d use so much mobile data and risk losing signal if you were in a remote location.

Waze on a phone is brilliant, or TomTom. They are much better than most built-in systems as they tend to have better live traffic and completely up-to-date mapping.

I use Waze on my phone, but it connects to my car so it shows up on the screen. What I mean is that actually using the phone itself rather than the screen in the car is much harder.
