I had the misfortune to take the train yesterday.

I was quite shocked at parents letting their kids run around the train, screaming, shouting standing on seats etc and people who think it’s acceptable to not use headphones and just play music out of their phones, and then some absolute twat who blocked the doorway with his pram and tried to tell the guard he couldn’t fold it up, meaning no one could escape in an emergency or exit the train. He miraculously suddenly was able to fold it when the guard said he would have to stand with it by the actual exit.

My kids would not have behaved like this (including 1 ASC and was single mum to 3) because they are considerate to others and respectful of others property, can people not buy headphones what is with playing phones/iPads for all to hear?

Fresh hell or I am a grumpy old bitch?

Haha welcome to life travelling by train!

At this time of year there are plenty of people getting trains when they usually drive and they lack the awareness that the space is for everyone, not just them.

I don't have a driving licence do I use PT a lot. I have a cross-country trip coming up and am absolutely dreading it, because people are so so bloody inconsiderate.

YANBU.

Sadly, a lot of people have forgotten how to behave considerately in public space they share with others.

But be prepared for a barrage of replies, excusing the parents' lack of parenting you observed.

It’s much better on the commuter trains.

On the times when we use longer-distance ones we try too book early and so get affordable first-class tickets. The difference can really be night and day between first and standard class coaches.

Part of my role at work involves running parenting courses, sometimes it’s hard to be off duty 🙈🙈

After a journey last summer I vowed never again. Full train. Lady with a toddler in a buggy gets on. Assume dgm. He is trying to hold the pole at the doorway.. Middle of the area. No attached to the door handle or loo door. She pulls the buggy back. He screams. Train juggles the buggy forward. He reaches for the pole. She pulls the buggy back. For 90 fucking minutes. Took every breath of me to not shout Just Let Him Hold The Fucking Pole!

YANBU. I used to catch a train to work - very crowded but at least everyone is courteous and quiet in the early morning, because everyone is tired and travelling alone. You could sometimes worry you might not be able to get off at your stop because it’s so full, but no, the sea just magically parts 😄
Although it’s less busy in the middle of the day, there does seem to be more ignorant people trying to get from place to place at that time which makes travelling at that time a bigger pain in the arse in my opinion.

I’m with you OP. I went through a phase of train travel before we could go abroad during the virus. It was lovely to begin with as we were sometimes the only people in the carriage. But then it all changed as people got more confident. My blood run cold whenever adults got on with a tribe of young kids, or teenagers, but they were OK. It was the bastards commuting who were the problem. They chatted loudly about meetings, then they’d FaceTime family & friends. In between they’d watch YouTube whilst laughing hysterically. But if I sit in the quiet carriages I’m almost holding my breath for fear of disturbing someone. I’ll be going 1st class if I ever do it again.

Get yourself some noise-cancelling headphones, take a book, crack on.

Well I was with a friend so that might have been a bit anti social 🤣
