To ask whether we have a Government at the moment?

I know that some would argue that no Government is better than what we have had in the past, but at present we seem to be facing a number of challenges (possible recession, cost of living crisis, Russia/Ukraine, Taiwan, NHS to name a few) but we don't appear to have a functioning government or plan to tackle them.

I know the Government are focused on the Conservative Party leadership contest but it seems to be an over lengthy process/ very self indulgent given the problems we face. Now they are down to two candidates surely members can just vote? Why wait weeks?

We need a functioning Government to respond to the problems the country is facing - and now, not in a months time. AIBU in thinking that this protracted contest seems very self indulgent given the circumstances?

We haven't had a functioning government for over a decade

There are ministers at the head of each dept who are still working. The PM was just in NI. It's the summer holidays, it always feels like this in August.

No, they are all on their well earned holidays,
recharging their batteries ready to take on the looming crisis

Belgium didn't have a government for yonks, and they kept things going.

That's not a bad approach - just keep things going, rather than having Bold New Plans (that will last all of 5 minutes)

Parliament should be recalled from the summer recess. There are too many urgent issues that need addressing. I don’t know why they don’t get on and do the vote now either. It sounds like most of them have already made up their minds and we will be stuck with LT as PM until they finally get voted out at the next election. I guess the longer it takes for the new leader to be confirmed, the less time there is for any damage to be done.

I agree, but something makes me think that the government isn't interested in the looming financial crisis. After all, many ministers have a little stash hidden away in offshore accounts.

When does Patliament get summoned back over the summer? For war? Not even then sometimes. 🙄 What decisions would the HofP get to make? The Tories have a majority. What would they want to discuss with the other parties? Our political system is not a system of mutual agreement.

As a civil servant there is very much a Government in place , some decisions have been paused or slowed in lieu of new leadership but I’ve never know it to be busier
