I am a very nervous flyer and nowadays I’m really struggling- feel really overwhelmed. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks as it is..proponlol has been prescribed- gp said Valium etc not prescribed for travel anxiety any longer. I need to make a trip- to see family after 3 years. The usual flight is 7 hours break then another 5 hours- after multiple panic attacks even looking at flights I’ve come up with a solution I’ve come to
fly 3 hours break then another 5 hours break and then 5 hours to the destination

essentially breaking the first leg of the journey into two- is that really stupid? As I said I’m trying everything I can do- medicine, have written to the airline to understand if any support available- I can book business class - not a stealth boast rather a work perk but I don’t know what difference that would make for a nervous passenger

Business class is better will be quieter and less full on and more room for you.

Depends what about flying you are anxious about

I don't see how having to get on and off a plane more is better.

Take off and landing are the most dangerous times on flights, so if it's a safety angle the less stops the better.

If it's being on the aircraft in general the extra stop might be helpful

alnawire · 04/08/2022 12:32

I don't think taking 3 flights instead of 2 Weill be remotely helpful. You have more stress, not less.

bert3400 · 04/08/2022 12:36

Have you thought about Hypnosis, it's got excellent results as long as you go to a recommended practitioner. I fly a lot and used to be very anxious, but the more I do it, the less I worry .

neverbeenskiing · 04/08/2022 12:36

Unless I've misunderstood, OP, you're proposing to take 3 flights instead of the usual 2? Why would that make you less anxious? If you think it will then go for it, I'm just struggling to see how 3 flights is less stressful than 2.

Ponoka7 · 04/08/2022 12:36

Would a overnight flight be any use? I also don't think that getting on multiple airplanes and having a longer journey will help.

MyGiddyAunt1 · 04/08/2022 22:47

I’ll try to answer as many quest as possible;

@Alfenstein it is everything to do with flying - I don’t like the feeling being stuck on a flight for long hence the plan of cutting the journey

@alnawire agree but I just feel so nervous about being in a flight for too long

@bert3400 contacted a hypnotherapist- waiting for a call back however not sure I’ll be able to get an appointment soon

@neverbeenskiing its just to minimise the time inside a flight- it’s not logical but my anxious grain is rarely logical

@Ponoka7 an overnight flight scares me shitless- with all the dining of lights etc.

Definitely try hypnotherapy. Cured me in one session.

mumoffloofs · 04/08/2022 23:13

Not sure if they still do them but airports used to do courses for anxious fliers. My DF did one and it really helped - you can't stop him jetsetting all over the place these days!
