I clicked on a clicky Facebook six figure income link.

Intensive googling reveals only positive reviews - but it's got to be too good to be true, right?

Talk me out of spending money here, mumsnet!

Copywriting is not something that will make you rich, and it’s extremely competitive. There are far more freelance copywriters out there than there are copywriting opportunities and very few in-house copywriting jobs. The only person getting rich from that course is the company that runs it.

If I was able to make 6 figures from a job I wouldn't be spamming Facebook advertising to everybody how they could too make 6 figures from the same job potentially pricing me out of my own employment...

Yeah these are really valid points. But there are heaps of good reviews and a money back guarantee.... aaarg!

Yes, I’ve done it. I’d say it was worth it - mainly for the confidence it gave me to go for it. I did a few jobs afterwards and more than earned the money back. Turned out I didn’t really enjoy copywriting so I haven’t explored it further but there’s definitely money to be made.

They don't offer refunds but a '30-day conditional guarantee', and any return is 'discretionary'. You have to show you've completed the course and show proof you've sent 25 pitching emails within 30 days of purchase. So if you start the course it and realise it's not for you, you won't be able to stop and get a refund. Their T&Cs have a 'non-disparagement' clause, covering remarks that might 'reasonably be construed to be derogatory or critical of, or negative'.

@Footballmatchdilemma did you learn things you couldn't have figured out for yourself? Is the magic in what they teach you, or in what they tell you to put in the pitch letters?
I could imagine if I emailed a load of businesses trying to offer copywriting services I'd just get ignored.

I do enjoy writing but I am very wary of getting burned.

Anyone making that much money doesn't waste their time running courses for someone else to do it too.

I used to be a freelance copywriter. For several well-known brands, and small businesses. I got out 15 years ago due to fees driven down, and expectations driven up, by the increasing attitude that nothing requires actual skill, anyone with access to a PC and the Internet can do anything. I used to charge £250-£300 day rate then, after 10 years prior in-house experience, plus 5 years professional editing experience. People started attempting to do the same thing, for peanuts. Rates are currently low, unless you work at an ad agency, and you won't get into that with an online course. Got pissed off with it and changed career.

If you are really interested, there are professional courses, and building a strong portfolio is how you get freelance work (I had this from my in-house roles). Otherwise, you'll be stuck doing £20 crap jobs off Fiverr.

PS and having seen the post from hollyhocks, I wouldn't touch Fiverr or any of those 'race to the bottom for the cheapest rates' places.

I wouldn’t have known where to start without the course, so in that sense it was useful. I learnt a lot about the technical side of copywriting (SEO etc) and it gave me confidence. The Facebook groups are really useful for advice and the exercises you do are good practice. So, overall I’m glad I did it and it was easy to make the money back with a couple of small jobs. As for turning it into a career, I don’t know…

I've been looking at that course and am quite dubious about it, as with most FB advertisements.
I've found CIEP to be a far more 'trustworthy' website. If you have the money of course. But it can be done in installments per unit and fees drop if you pay to be a member. (Start in Jan/Feb and you get 2 months free).

I am not a copywriter but work with a few. They do not get rich, fees have gone down.

You certainly do not need to do that course. Throw the ad away and start a threat about how to be a copywriter.
