Advice on Facebook marketplace

I’m new to this. Selling baby items. I’m selling a steriliser for £20. A guy messaged me saying he will send a DPD driver to my home to collect. It might be as I’m new to this but I have a weird feeling. I cannot even see this guys profile page - it’s just a picture of a sunflower. Can you usually see the persons profile pic on marketplace? I haven’t given my address either yet as have a funny feeling. I’ve told him he can only come on the weekends between a certain time. DH will be home then do feel more comfortable. Am I right in being wary?

It’s a scam.

Oxo01 · 03/08/2022 15:15

Yes say pick up only and cash

Sugarplumfairy65 · 03/08/2022 15:15

It's a well publicized scam

MindatWork · 03/08/2022 15:16

It's a scam OP - if you carry on with it they'll try and make out there's some sort of insurance you have to pay for the courier, and then they'll pay you back etc etc. I've had this a few times but a quick google shows it's not legit.

I'd report and block.

cookiesNcrea · 03/08/2022 15:16

But he said he will give the DPD driver the cash and he will collect from me. Shall I block this guy?

Have you EVER heard of dpd handling cash.

Of course you block him.

It's so well publices scam (i am sure it was on here yesterday as well) that I am surprised people haven't heard about it yet tbh

Who would organise a DPD driver just for a £20 steriliser? No one. It's definitely a scam

cookiesNcrea · 03/08/2022 15:21

I’ve blocked him and reported to Amazon. I felt there was something off. Thank you for clarifying. That’s why I hate Facebook marketplace as they can see your profile pic and that makes me a little uneasy

Lol! Not Amazon I meant Facebook

What’s Amazon got to do with Facebook?

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas read the message above.

Can someone explain how this scam was supposed to work? It seems a lot of effort for a second hand steriliser or was the attempt to gain entry to my home and steal things?

OP posts:
Bubblebubblebah · 03/08/2022 15:37

It's usually asking you to pay courier insurance and they will add it to the cash they supposedly swns.

Afaik you can't send cash via couriers in UK at all

cookiesNcrea · 03/08/2022 15:40

Thank you mumsnet! You all are amazing

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 03/08/2022 15:42

I’ve done it via courier before but I pay for the item, pay for the courier and then the seller all the tracking info too.

This man is a scammer

Marvellousmadness · 03/08/2022 15:45

I simply never sell to people with no profile picture. Or people with sketchy shit on their profiles. Or any people who look dodgy

Marvellousmadness · 03/08/2022 15:45

Just use your common sense op

cookiesNcrea · 03/08/2022 15:59

Thank you. It’s put me off now tbh. The ads been up for a week and he was only one to respond lol

what else can I do with the baby items? I don’t think charity will accept these items. I’m not bothered about the money too much, obviously would be nice to get a small bit but I want the baby stuff to get use out of them rather than throw away. What shall I do with them?

OP posts:
applepineapple · 03/08/2022 16:02

Try Olio, it's a local app where you give items away. As long as you don't mind people coming to your door to collect, I use it all the time.

Tinktravels · 03/08/2022 16:04

I've had this message so many times!
Also suddenly up the price and tell him you want 100 and he will agree straight away ,🤣 total scam,
Not sure how the actual scam works I've always just ignored

VerifiedBot2351 · 03/08/2022 16:07

Do you belong to any local Facebook groups where you could give it away?

cookiesNcrea · 03/08/2022 16:41

Just found out Salvation Army has a baby bank that accepts baby items.
