To want sex based rights enshrined in our new Bill of Rights?

The Conservative Government are drawing up a new Bill of Rights to replace the Human Rights Act 1998. I think it is an amazing opportunity to protect all people's rights to the dignity and privacy of Single Sex Spaces and protect our right to abortion.

The Tories introduced Self ID and though some of them are pushing back now, it's not a priority. Many of them don't give a shit either way and the tendency of the Conservative party to spin on a sixpence means I have zero faith in what they "say".

I'm also alarmed that the right to abortion will not be included.Hmm

So AIBU to want sex based rights enshrined in our new, shiny Bill of Rights?

You are naive to the point of complete foolishness if you see this as an 'opportunity' for the government to do anything other than take away our human rights.

I want my human rights as I have them now.

If you trust the Tories with your rights heaven help you as you've been duped. If you don't actually care about your rights then heaven help the rest of us and you can have what's coming.

I'm so cross with foolish people falling for Tory lies on this as on so many other things.

No you're not BU!

Whitehorsegirl · 02/08/2022 17:10

Really?

You think it is great that this corrupt, lying and self-serving fools are trying to remove the protections given to us by the Human Rights Act?

They are only doing this to remove your rights not to add to them...

carefullycourageous · 02/08/2022 17:13

They'll protect the rights of non-doms and oligarchs to hide their money before they protect any British woman.

They've done a fucking number on women, made them think they give a shit, and now they'll take away rights from all men, women and trans people in one fell swoop.

You know when Rees-Mogg said there'd be no queues at Dover? If you trust them twice you are a fucking Muppet. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU. ALL THE TIME.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 02/08/2022 17:15

This Bill muddies certain legal waters and, if it was passed as is, would actually restrict and obfuscate access to justice and the courts system for a lot of people, especially given the new permission stage.

The omission of any mention of abortion rights should be a clarion signal and the tip of an absolute iceberg of shite — women are not being protected or served by this government, its proposed Bills, or indeed the likely shape of the next administration, in any way.

araiwa · 02/08/2022 17:48

Oh my sweet summer child

We're not gonna be getting more rights, we'll be losing them-

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/08/2022 17:56

Ah come on. I'm trying my best to be optimistic here and giving the Conservatives an opportunity to undo some of the damage they have done.

I understand that they're a bunch of lying liars, but if we are to have a Bill of Rights I want some women's rights in it. The fact they have ruled out the inclusion of abortion rights is disturbing. Especially given the damage they have done to women in their 12 years in office.😬

Why not include it?

I think we’re just meant to be grateful if we have any rights left after this.

Fuck the Tories.

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 02/08/2022 18:10

I think YABVVVU to think that we will gain any rights whatsoever in this new Bill of Rights. It's designed to remove human rights, not add to them. Although, to be fair, Rishi is now leaning hard into the US culture war stuff so I can easily believe he'd happily stick in something about keeping trans women out of the ladies lav in order to throw a bit of smoke in the way of the damage his government plans to do to the rights of rape victims, single mothers, women dealing with unwanted pregnancies, female refugees, and gay women in general.

Mia85 · 02/08/2022 18:11

This Bill of Rights is not intended to give us more rights. They are taking the same list of rights in the Human Rights Act and making it much more difficult to actually protect them. That's the point of the Bill.

Stop being optimistic, start being realistic.

Honestly it is people like you being optimistic that let this lot get away with it. Grow up. Wake up.

Please.

The best things people can do are protest by writing to their nearest Tory, support the opposition in your seat, and tell everyone how serious and scary this is. Educate yourself, wrote to local papers and share messages on social media.

This post is a bit like swapping all your worldly possessions for a bag of beans which you've been promised will be magic. Not even sure where to start Confused

balalake · 02/08/2022 20:26

More chance of Boris Johnson being faithful to any wife than the Bill of Rights actually protecting women. Even with a woman Prime Minister as is possible from September 5th.

That is precisely what is happening, it is partly what Brexit was about (leaders rather than voters). The more people who engage the better. People need to engage with politics. All the parties are not the same - one party (Tory) is not like the others.
