And any other tips for preteen household chores? I need to get them to do more.

Duvet cover inside out

hands in to the top corners, grab duvet with each hand/corner

shake duvet over hands to turn right way and over the duvet

takes about 20 seconds

Yep this. So much easier.

This is how I do it too

. Would setting them a challenge to follow this YouTube clip work?
Rowgtfc72 · 02/08/2022 15:40

As above. I worked at butlins when I was at uni and changed hundreds of beds. This is what I was taught.

coodawoodashooda · 02/08/2022 15:55

Thank you everyone. Should I start storing the covers inside out? I feel like I am drowning in jobs.

LegArmpits · 02/08/2022 15:59

Even easier if you do it this way but draped over a bannister.

DollyPartonsBeard · 02/08/2022 15:59

I wash and store mine inside out (and the whole set of bed linen folded inside one of the pillowcases before I put it away) The inside out duvet cover method is a game changer!

coodawoodashooda · 02/08/2022 16:02

How tall does the person/child need to be for this to be a reasonable expectation?

They learn by copying examples. Just show them what you want done.

  1. they watch you do it
  2. they help you do it
  3. they do it on their own
Personally, I go for the inside out method of putting a duvet cover on.
TestingTestingWonTooFree · 02/08/2022 16:04

I think talker than most pre teens are. I’d guess 5 foot. Why don’t you supervise them doing it and see whether it’s viable.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 02/08/2022 16:04

A 7 year old can do it with Eli. An 8 year old can do it on their own (with time).

DifficultBloodyWoman · 02/08/2022 16:05

I don’t know who Eli is! That was supposed to say with help.

Came in to say this. I worked in a German hotel in Uni and was taught this. When I came home, I taught my mum and she taught the whole town!!! There is now a town in the West of Ireland where everyone changes their duvet covers like this😂

Oh god I was off to amazon to buy an Eli. Okay. Think I will make a point of teaching them this. Thanks everyone.

Yes, I do - I take them off inside out, wash them and fold them still inside out.

Vargas · 02/08/2022 16:07

Do they clear their dishes and put their clothes away? Set the table? Empty the dishwasher?

SalviaOfficinalis · 02/08/2022 16:08

Not suggesting you go into the linen cupboard and turn them all inside out, but next time the bed is stripped leave them inside out.

I do this too. DH doesn’t get it at all, he doesn’t understand how it works. I demonstrate it in front of him and his face has the same look that the cat does when you disappear the bird or mouse she brings in to the house by chucking a towel over it. A real “WTF just happened was it magic” expression.

Imissprosecco · 02/08/2022 16:13

I'm not very tall so to shake it out I stand on the bed (although over the bannister is a good idea!)

I take them off, make sure they’re inside out, fasten the poppers and buttons so stray socks and pants don’t get lost in there, then wash and dry and fold and put away. Then all you have to do is unfasten to put it back on.

Dalooah · 02/08/2022 16:17

Is there a size limitation on this method? I'm imagining a super king duvet might be harder to do than a single/double? Has anyone managed successfully with a larger one?

Yalz · 02/08/2022 16:17

Probably too much, but in addition to the inside out method I sewed two colours of ribbon to the inside corners of the duvet cover at the side opposite the opening, say red and blue. Sew matching ones on the duvet.

To put the cover on start by tying to the two red ribbons together and then the two blue ones . Then hold those corners in one hand as you pull the cover over the duvet with the other hand, and shake to get the cover down. Then pull the other corners of the duvet and the cover together and fasten the cover - the ribbons will keep the far corners in place as you do that, and while the duvet is being slept under.

FilePhoto · 02/08/2022 16:23

My DC do their duvets using the inside out method from on their beds (one high and one mid sleeper).

I wash and dry bedding. Fold it however it is, usually inside out. Store sheet, duvet cover and second pillow case inside a pillow case.

Often but not enough.
