First of all, I’ve name changed for privacy.
I just need a handhold really. Cost of living has fucked us. I got paid yesterday and I’m already overdrawn because my electricity has gone up. I have no food, it’s the holidays, I just want to cry. But obviously I can’t because the kids are here completely oblivious. I’m going to have to go to the food bank but no way of getting there until tonight when I can get a lift. I feel like such a failure.

You can ring the bank to recall your electric direct debit. They'll put it back into your account, as you didn't agree to the amount it was raised by.

Was it to cover debt or just a higher usage? You can get it back down. Or cancel DD and pay for your usage.

((Hugs)) You are NOT a failure. Millions of people up and down the country have less money coming in than they need to pay for essentials - according to this article, one in five households are already in this situation: www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/25/fifth-of-uk-households-have-negative-disposable-income-shortfall-pounds-60-essential-rent-food

I hope that doesn't come across like I think you are just a statistic. It's a painful place to be in, and there aren't any easy answers. I just hope you can let go of the shame, because it's nothing to be ashamed of, any more than if your house had burned down and you had nowhere to stay. You've been put in an impossible position.

As a society we need to let go of the idea that people who have money should be proud and those who have too little money to pay their bills should be ashamed. The sooner that happens, the better.

You are very very far from a failure. You’re trying to get by and you’re looking after your kids. I really hope things get better for you soon
