To tell you I can get a same day doctors appointment

Reading threads on here and in the media where people mention three week wait for doctors appointments.

I call my doctors at 8am on the dot, usually around 37th in the queue, on hold for 20 mins then I get an appointment same day (I prefer telephone appts but have also been offered face-face).

Is it regional? I'm just outside London (inside M25).

Where are you and what's your wait?

I’m in the southwest. I have been given the choice of face to face or telephone appointment several times. If I stress something as urgent I can usually get in. I’ve never waited 3 weeks unless it’s for like a blood test or medical review or something.

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 01/08/2022 21:05

Dd has waited a week for a phone appointment to discuss her obvious tonsillitis.. Waste of everyone's bloody time.

GP apparently not doing face to face.
She flaming well does at another clinic up the road one day a week.

Me too. Our Gp surgery offers an afternoon triage appointment. It's the same Dr. that offers these appointments in the afternoons- the other Dr's do all the other ones. It's the only surgery in a rural area, so I realise how unusual this is. My friend who lives 6 miles away has to wait weeks.
Went in at 12.30pm, showed the receptionist the infection tracking up the vein in my leg, she booked me into the Dr. at 4.15pm. Scan, tablets and blood tests booked/sorted/organised by 4.45pm. Our local Minor Injuries closed down so the GP's are working very hard to try and keep patients out of the big main hospital.
I'm very grateful for the care provided (they were brilliant when we had covid in the first wave- send home O2 monitors etc) and I have written to the practise manager- and if they get inspected, I am happy for my letter to be shared.
We can always get appointments for the kids- even if we come at 6pm and wait, they will see us. My youngest was prone to ear infections/burst ear drums and we were well used to the '5 minute squeeze in.' I am absolutely aware of how lucky were are.

Elsiid · 01/08/2022 21:17

Me too. Our doctors are fantastic.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/08/2022 21:18

SW.
I was offered a telephone appointment in 7 weeks time for a new ( and possibly serious) cardiac issue.

Rowgtfc72 · 01/08/2022 21:20

I can get same day appts. East coast seaside town. Feel for those people not in the same position.

heldinadream · 01/08/2022 21:21

Southwest, rural - seen instantly twice in the last few weeks. "Can you get in now?" " Yes, in fifteen minutes." "Appt in twenty minutes then."
Amazing. But very grateful for being seen so quickly.

bubblescoop · 01/08/2022 21:23

I can get a same day doctors appointment at any time before midday 🤷‍♀️

FictionalCharacter · 01/08/2022 21:24

We don’t get offered face to face appointments when we call. You call in the morning, they organise a phone consultation, then the GP tells you to come in if they think they need to see you. This is obviously something that varies a lot from one surgery to another, depending on their policy and the availability of GPs.

Plumbear2 · 01/08/2022 21:24

So you are boasting to all those who carnt get appointments? How sad you must be.

Merrygoroundtoo · 01/08/2022 21:25

Switched to an online/virtual doctors and book appointments via an app. Made the change as could never get a same day appointment at old surgery. Online/virtual doctors sometimes has same day appointments for urgent things, but generally refer to walking centre or a and e for anything immediate that they are unsure of.

OhMammaMia · 01/08/2022 21:26

NW London, 4 weeks wait for a face to face appointment, then they cancelled and I was supposed to call to reschedule
I was in too much pain so we drove to DH’s home country and got it sorted privately (for about the 3rd of the price it would have cost here)

Festivalpartygirl · 01/08/2022 21:26

I got same day NHS dentist appt today - it was sit and wait at the end of the day but even so I got treated. South coast.

ButDoYouAvocado · 01/08/2022 21:26

I’ve had both with no problems. Glasgow Southside

ReviewingTheSituation · 01/08/2022 21:28

We can only get same day appts. No option to book anything else. Seems a bit of an odd system as you get seen on the day for something you'd be happy to wait a week or so for, but I guess it must work for our practice.

Oblomov22 · 01/08/2022 21:29

Always. Same day. Surrey. Go online, leave a message,GP rings you back the same day.

Walkingtheplank · 01/08/2022 21:29

Plumbear2 · 01/08/2022 21:24

No, she's not boasting. She is dispelling the myth that it's impossible for everyone to get a GP appointment.

Irridescantshimmmer · 01/08/2022 21:29

I am in the NW Greater Manchester area and I can not get any appointment with a GP. If I need antibiotics I walk up to the local hospital walk in clinic.

My last face to face appointment was in August 2019 where the GP refused to book me a blood test HbA1c as requested by a hospital consultant!

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 01/08/2022 21:29

Same day GP appointments here too, or you can book online 24/7.

I can also get into the dentist on the same day, but that's not NHS as I pay for private dental care.

HRTQueen · 01/08/2022 21:30

SE London poorish area

I’ve been trying to get an appointment for over a week and using the app no luck and today I went to the GP a printed request

no longer have face to face appoints until after you have have had a consultation a real push for everyone to use online services this isn’t possible foe many people

my GP is way over subscribed, poorer areas have higher health concerns within the population and GP’s are stretched more

ive recently gone private (this is an ongoing health issue so not covered with my private health care) cost of an evening out covers my monthly payment have used the service a few times and it’s been great

NHS is absolutely dire at the moment in many areas and it’s unlikely to improve

lrosey · 01/08/2022 21:33

I’m in the East Midlands, if I ring my GP surgery at 8 o’clock I can get a phone call apt for that day and seen the same day (if they deem necessary) for myself / my son. Booking an apt with a specific doctor is probably a couple of weeks but can always get seen on the day if urgent! Really feel for those that don’t have the same with their practices.

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 21:33

Last week offered a phone appt for 19th August - SE London. During covid they had E consults which would be fine for what I want but that hasn’t been working for over a week on the website

stillherenow · 01/08/2022 21:34

I get a phone call within an hour at mine. Out of London here. They're brilliant

Pre pandemic I lived in London and couldn't get an appointment on the day at all unless I turned up in person at the doctors at 8am to book one .

puddingandsun · 01/08/2022 21:35

When I call for my son I get a phone app, sometimes face to face, on same day.
I called for myself recently- first time in many years- and was advised to consult a pharmacist!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/08/2022 21:35

I phoned at 8am and there was a recorded message saying all appointments were full and unless it was an emergency or routine to call back at 2pm for the next day. I didn't think it was either at the time so didn't wait. My surgery has stopped doing online or email requests so you have no choice but to wait. If the problem flares up again I'm going to the walk in centre.
