Cutting contact with family members

Does anyone else notice that irl and on MN that people think that no matter what a family member does you should not cut them off because “they are family” so it doesn’t matter what they have done to you, sometimes it’s years of abuse and then it’s finally the last straw so you cut them off only to be told by people you should forgive them because they are family, why do people think someone should be allowed to do whatever they like? Usually people don’t cut off family unless it’s very extreme circumstances and they’ve put up with so much from them. So aibu to think you shouldn’t have to forgive someone just because you are related to them?

I agree, my grandmother was a nasty woman, i was very low contact with her and my MIL always told me she thought I should go and see her (she's all about respect for elders even if they don't deserve it), funnily enough I'm now low contact with MIL for the same reasons

Glad it’s not just me, I’ve heard “how would you feel if your family cut you off” well I wouldn’t spend years abusing them to the point that they’ve had no choice
