Ketones in pee?????

If a urine dip test is very positive for ketones, what does that actually mean? Is it bad or not-normal-but-also-not-serious? Could it be caused by a sickness bug and not eating properly for a day or so?

And a quick side question- is ketone in wee an effect of the keto diet? I’m not doing the keto diet at the moment but I’ve heard of it before and just wondered if it was related or similar.

Much appreciated!

It generally means your body is going into starvation mode.

I had this when I had terrible morning sickness.

try to eat

Cakeandcoffee93 · 30/07/2022 21:39

It’s normal to have a tiny amount after fasting ot exercise. What level did you get? If it’s over a certain amount it can be an indication of diabetes !!

Lougle · 30/07/2022 21:40

Yes, starvation for any reason can cause this. If you're otherwise healthy, then it will resolve when you eat properly.

Ketones in urine are as a result of burning fat instead of glucose. The presence in urine could be due to a keto diet (but you aren't doing that OP) but also D&V, morning sickness or anything that means you aren't eating enough and have started to burn your fat reserves.

SpittinKitten · 30/07/2022 21:45

I had them when my diabetes was uncontrolled and blood sugars dangerously high.

Would need more info. Have you been fasting, Ill, concerned about diabetes? Ketones can be present for many different reasons.

SortingOffice · 30/07/2022 21:48

I had this in pregnancy when I had severe sickness. I couldn't keep food down and was admitted to hospital.

Can also indicate kidney issues or endocrine disorder. If your not aware of eating drastically less you should run or by GP.

Your body is breaking down muscle and fat and can affect your blood. Are you vomiting a lot and dehydrated?

EverybodySayMochalatte · 31/07/2022 00:24

That’s really interesting, I had no idea what it even was or what caused it. I’d heard of the keto diet in a magazine before so I wasn’t sure if it was the same thing or just a coincidence it sounded similar!

im fine now, I had a sickness bug and didn’t eat for a day or two because of it. I had a urine test done and it showed a lot of ketones. I’m back to normal now but just wasn’t sure what it meant or if it was normal or not! Good to know it’s normal after not eating.
