Sneaky discount advertising?

ASOS is currently advertising a 15% off all items discount code on their website. On trying to apply it, it came up with an error message saying it was no longer valid.

On correspondence with their chat, they say it was only eligible until 28 July. They have offered to give me another code (which I am however still trying to resolve as this was is also invalid for a different reason!).

AIBU to think that rather than them forgetting to remove the banner, this is a deliberate ploy to get people who aren't quite as stubborn as me to still go ahead with their purchase with no discount after originally thinking they had a discount?

I can’t see a promo on their homepage. The usually have a 15% promo for your first order but it will obviously be invalid if you have an existing account.

Pixies74 · 30/07/2022 19:30

I haven't ordered before which is probably why I could see the advertisement.

The error is that it had expired, not that it was invalid so they really shouldn't still be advertising it.

And they are now saying that there is no code they can offer me. Really unimpressed.

Just wait until they have another discount available. They do them constantly.

I only need to buy one dress for a wedding though and they literally have one left in stock...

And I just wasted 50 minutes of my life on their online chat for nothing!

And I also think it's quite cunning as people will be drawn into buying something that they might not have done if they hadn't seen a discount being advertised... But then still go ahead with their purchase when it comes up as no longer eligible.

Does this not apply?

It does say under the code that it can’t be used on all items.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 30/07/2022 20:03

There is nearly always a code on a Sunday evening.

That's not the issue though. My item was valid. It's the fact they're falsely advertising a code that expired two days ago.

I've just looked on their webpage after changing my VPN and the HIFRIEND code is showing for me too and when you click into it it says expires on July 28th just like you said.

That is really unfair, especially when you have contacted them.

OP here's a student discount for 10% off, buy your dress before it disappears:

Thank you. I think I'm more annoyed as I wasted my time on their rubbish customer service! And the gall of luring in unsuspecting customers.
