There’s an intersection where I live, v busy and a lot of traffic. DH and I driving the other day, and we saw a bunch of people saying they were to be crowd funding. They had t shirts and leaflets with a bald toddler on, they claimed they were crowd funding for cancer treatment for said child that’s not available in the Uk. There was at least 20 people. Like many, We never really give money to the people who on windows for cash, but because it was a child with cancer we did, as did a LOT of other people.

we asked for a flyer with the intention of going online and donating more than the few quid we had in the car , and they were v reluctant but gave it in the end, no web address or anything on it.

few days later, local police put out a statement saying that it’s a scam and the people have been apprehended.

i mean, maybe it was obvious to some but honestly who would stoop so low to pretend a kid has cancer to cheat people out of money.

i feel like this is one of the worst possible scams to run, because there are some v v sick children on the UK that do have to crowd find to get life saving treatment. Makes me feel sick

it's scummy but there is so much more scummy & horrible. I wouldn't dwell on it.

SundayTeatime · 30/07/2022 17:45

Despicable. And very scummy. I would dwell on it too.

Amdone123 · 30/07/2022 17:46

I wouldn't have given money. Full stop.

OlympicProcrastinator · 30/07/2022 17:46

This is nothing new unfortunately. Go Fund Me is full of scammers pretending to have cancer and there have been several news reports about people scamming work colleagues and even family by faking cancer. I agree it’s despicable but humans will human.

Riddlemethisplz · 30/07/2022 17:48

See I’ve never encountered people faking cancer, I mean an adult is one thing but a kid, next level.

im just stunned people would stoop so low

Are you the same person who just wrote a thread about a go fund me child funeral by any chance Hmm

Readytoplay · 30/07/2022 17:51

are completely and utterly ruthless!

Unfortunately, these shits know that, because most people have morals, people will do and give anything if they believe it’s to fight cancer. You said it yourself OP.

Utterly disgusting! This is partly why I, unfortunately, don’t give to anyone who asks me for money on the street, regardless of what it is for!
(and a bad experience in the past) 😞

MissMaple82 · 30/07/2022 17:52

I dont trust anything like that, I never give money.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2022 17:52

Yes it's Scummy @Riddlemethisplz. But not one of the most despicable things ever. There are much worse things career criminals and the desperate can do to get money.

MissMaple82 · 30/07/2022 17:52

People fake cancer all the damn time!

TheCanyon · 30/07/2022 17:57

You ever heard of gypsy rose blanchard? Now that is despicable.

EhatBow · 30/07/2022 18:01

Sadly even when the child in question is seriously ill, the money doesn't often get used in the way the donors believed it would.

mrsfoof · 30/07/2022 18:14

Unfortunately, a huge number of crowd funded appeals for medical treatment, funerals (especially involving children) are fake. Unless you have a personal connection to the family or the cause has been highlighted in the mainstream press, I'd avoid.

Can’t believe I forgot to say in the Op, they had a bald kid with them too. So they must have just shaved one of their own children’s heads. It might not be ‘the worst’ thing you can ever do, but it’s pretty morally repugnant. I’d never seen anything like it before, in person at least, I mean there’s all kinds of crap on the internet

I don't either. Too many nasty, greedy people in the world.

ManateeFair · 30/07/2022 19:27

Obviously it’s shitty.

However, people really ought to learn to apply some critical thinking to this stuff. It’s very obvious even from your description that this would be a scam.

With a bald kid too? I must be super gullible
