Have I lost this much weight or are my scales broken?

I've been really depressed recently, lost my appetite a bit but not given up eating. Anyway, I weighed myself today for the first time in 9 weeks and my scales say I've lost 1 stone 10lbs and down 6 inches around my waist, but I haven't noticed it in my clothes. Are my scales broken? If they are not should I be concerned?

That's a weight loss of around 3lb a week which is possible if you are very overweight to start with.

what sort of scales are they? The old fashioned ones with a dial might become inaccurate over time but not to that extent. Modern digital ones are more likely to stop working completely rather show the wrong weight so I think it's more likely to be weight loss particularly when you also have the inch loss.

If this is making you underweight then yes you should be concerned and eating more healthily. If it's moving you towards a healthy weight there no need for concern atm but you should still start eating more healthily. Quite apart from anything else a balanced diet can help ease symptoms of depression. And see your doctor about the depression.

They are electric scales and I have spoken to my doctor and am changing my tablets

I have been feeling very shaky, tired and unwell which makes sense if I've been in a calorie deficit. I just can't believe I have been when I've been having chocolate for breakfast and takeaway for dinner. I guess it really is true you can get thin eating absolute garbage.

I know I need to sort out my eating habits. I actually weighed today to start doing a calorie deficit and now am wondering if I need to. It's probably not the priority at all if my weight is taking care of itself it's me that needs to take better care of myself in other ways. I might just throw the diet out the window and find another focus to try and help get my out of this funk

I might ask the doctor to check my thyroid

I've lost a lot of weight over the last year and I feel amazing. I don't calorie count, just eat healthy unprocessed food in small portions. Fruit, eggs, salads, Greek yoghurt, homemade vegetable soups and ratatouille type dishes, small helpings of oily fish or a small steak once in a while etc. I turned 60 recently and have more energy than I have had for years.and that energy helps me exercise which lifts my mood but it all started with eating more healthily.

I still have the occasional chocolate/biscuit/pizza etc but not often and I don't miss them. If only I could cut out the wine and gin I'd be perfect!

The last time I dropped 20lb whilst not restricting food at all and felt shaky, tired and not myself I had severe graves disease - overactive thyroid. Please get your thyroid checked OP just in case.

Antigonesaunt · 30/07/2022 23:08

Yes I think I will I looked it up earlier I have all the symptoms of graves. I have had a goitre for a couple of years now but been told it's probably nothing, I think I need to push for better care

Thanks for sharing your experience @MercuryOnTheRise

FunnysInLaJardin · 31/07/2022 13:26

I once lost 3 stone simply by putting my scales on the carpet instead of the tiled floor!

pippinsleftleg · 31/07/2022 13:33

Please still see your doctor and push for better care of you think you need it.

Antigonesaunt · 31/07/2022 14:07

I'm very happy at losing some cm round my waist and a couple of pounds, as neither are an indicator of anything underlying health wise unlike unexpected weight loss. I am going to speak to the GP about how crap I've been feeling though, worth having my thyroid checked anyway and some basic health screening, and some advice on my anxiety, depression, insomnia and advice on losing a few lbs the right way!
