To not know why I'm losing weight without trying to

Peapop777 · 30/07/2022 12:40

In the last 7/8 weeks I have lost just over 1 stone.
I weighed 9.4 stone and now weigh 8.2 stone.
Just got back from a week long holiday where I over indulged and have lost 2lb.
I'm a type 1 diabetic but that is in good control, I don't have any other medical issues and would say I am fit and healthy.
I don't have a big appetite but have always found it easy to maintain my weight.
Feel absolutely fine in myself so this weight loss is puzzling me.
Will be calling the GP on Monday but it's worrying me now so thought I would post to see if anyone has had similar.

If your diabetes is truly well controlled and your diet and activity levels haven’t changed significantly, hyperthyroidism is a possibility but that weight loss is a massive red flag for malignancy so prepare for a potential 2ww referral.

starpatch · 30/07/2022 12:51

Yes definitely speak to your GP. Thyroid problems are not uncommon with diabetes are they? so could be that?

MomwasCasual · 30/07/2022 12:52

Hows your blood pressure?

CatherinedeBourgh · 30/07/2022 12:53

When my mum had that it was her kidneys playing up.

That is a lot of weight loss. I hope they investigate it quickly.

Coffeaddict · 30/07/2022 12:54

I was going to mimic others and suggest thyroid.

Are you also tired?

InChocolateWeTrust · 30/07/2022 12:57

That's a huge weight loss and unless you are quite short, 8.2 stone is a rather low weight for an adult. I'd get to the GP promptly

Sofedupofitall · 30/07/2022 13:06

I was going to suggest type 1 diabetes but I see you already have been diagnosed with that. Hope the doctors figure it out quickly.

itsjustnotok · 30/07/2022 13:08

Unexplained weight loss is always a good thing to get checked out x

HollowTalk · 30/07/2022 13:08

It's great your diabetes is under control. I do think you need to see your GP soon. I hope everything's OK.

Peapop777 · 30/07/2022 13:09

I did wonder about thyroid as my brother has an underactive one but looking at symptoms for both under and over active I don't have any of them.
I'm 5 5 and 9.4 stone has always been what I call my happy weight.
Just checked my blood pressure and it's within normal range.

With my dm, it was Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Oncologist: didn’t you notice that you were losing weight?
DM: That’s what I was trying to do!

Jewel1968 · 30/07/2022 13:15

Agree with others see a GP. My partner is like you - naturally very slim and sometimes loses weight for no apparent reason. He went to gp recently for regular check up and reckons he is lowest weight he has ever been. It doesn't seem to be linked to calories or food directly. It's been like this for years. I think it's linked to changes in his metabolism caused by God knows what.

RandomMess · 30/07/2022 13:20

The other thing to get ruled out is ovarian cancer.

Peapop777 · 30/07/2022 13:34

I've stopped looking at what could be causing it as I'm starting to scare myself.
Thank you to everyone who's commented, will be on the phone first thing Monday to my GP

Rapid weight loss can be a symptom of several things. You're doing the right thing getting to the doctor quickly.

Ontomatopea · 30/07/2022 13:43

Yeah see the Dr. Might be worms, easily treatable.

RandomMess · 30/07/2022 13:45

Glad you are going to see the GP, be pushy to get the cause found whether it be worms or something harder to treat Flowers

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/07/2022 13:57

You need to talk to your GP Monday, as it can be a sign of a lot of things. They will investigate promptly.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/07/2022 13:58

sorry didn’t mean to scare you! A relative had this recently and it was nothing serious, but they will jump on it

Oh no it's fine, I was looking online as well and tbh I wouldn't have posted if I only wanted people to say oh it's nothing don't worry about it lol
Just hoping I can get seen as last time I needed to see the doctor last year it took me 3 days to even get a telephone appointment.

My grandmother lost a lot of weight quickly when she developed rheumatoid arthritis. I think she lost over 2 stone in 6 weeks.

I think there's quite a few autoimmune conditions which have sudden weight loss as a symptom. Autoimmune diseases like to hunt in packs and you already have one so it's worth considering if you have symptoms of any others. Like joint pains, joint swelling, bowel changes, any skin and nail changes, rashes etc.

You're definitely doing the right thing to seek an appointment with your GP. Hope you don't have to wait too long. If your GP does eConsult then try that if you can't get a quick appointment- at my surgery the GPs usually respond quickly to offer an appointment.

Yes when I googled I did see that as one of the causes but apart from the weight loss I am fit and healthy, got no other symptoms at all which is why it's really puzzling.
I do realize that already having an autoimmune condition probably puts me at more risk of others.

If you can't get a GP appointment at your usual surgery quickly I'd call 111 and see if there are any other centres with quicker bookings.

Peapop777 · 30/07/2022 20:36

@blebbleb didn't realize you could do that so thank you

Yes I think your case is definitely urgent enough as well!
