Anyone work in retail? Do shops have to ask for ID to sell energy drinks (Monster etc)?

Yes, you must be 16 to purchase.

hesttreat · 29/07/2022 19:51

Yes they do and if you go on self service checkout it's like buying alcohol and the assistant needs to ID you!

Mangogogogo · 29/07/2022 19:53

There is no law currently!

there is going to be as a part of the tackling obesity strategy but as it stands it is shops discretion and they can absolutely sell energy drinks to anyone legally

dementedpixie · 29/07/2022 19:54

There isn't a law but a lot of shops will ask for ID voluntarily

Mangogogogo · 29/07/2022 19:57

Proposed ban: www.gov.uk/government/consultations/ending-the-sale-of-energy-drinks-to-children

not in practise yet

Mangogogogo · 29/07/2022 19:57

I don’t work in retail but I work in law

Well I never knew that!

springisaroundthecorner · 29/07/2022 20:04

I thought it was law. Surprised

Don't think it's law but when I worked in a supermarket years ago they had a check ID screen come up and store policy was to sell to over 16s only.

MoodyTwo · 29/07/2022 20:07

So if you didn't have is, could they refuse to serve you, if it's not law?
Because it's not like challange 25

Cotswoldmama · 29/07/2022 20:09

I work in retail there is no law and we don't ID anyone.

If it's store policy yes they will refuse to sell it to you. It's policy in all major supermarkets/garages. Corner shops if privately run probably won't bother

Just out of interest, where do you work?

Just done my research because actually I was fascinated it's not law. I thought it was, as so many others it would appear.

Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Waitrose, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Boots, WHSmith, and Garages such as BP and Shell all say they ID for energy drinks and they have a 16+ policy.

I can't think of where else you could buy them from except for smaller, more independently run shops.

chatterbug22 · 29/07/2022 20:41

I was sure it was 16.

Coasterfan · 29/07/2022 20:44

our local Sainsbury’s won’t serve it to under 16s but our local corner shop isn’t bothered!
