Food police?

DH’s Gramps is a lovely man apart from his comments on what people are eating. For example “you’ve done well” when you’ve eaten a minuscule salad & saying to a 3 year old “no wonder you have a big tummy with all that on your plate”. It is making me dread any bbq/meal type events we have planned. I also don’t want my DS to be subjected to this kind of food policing. He is only 18 months so very unaware at the moment. AIBU to ask him to not comment on what people are eating? 😬As someone who is a bit chubby I don’t want to eat in front of him, but is that me reading into it after putting on a few pounds after having the baby?! (How long can I use that excuse?!) 🤣

Oh gawd it's so tedious when people do this, isn't it? Has anyone ever lost patience with him?

I have no idea why people insist on commenting about how much other people eat. The only time I might discuss how much somebody else eats is when catering, so deciding what/how much food to provide.

How often do you eat with the man for this to be an issue?

How old is he? Unless he’s ancient and slightly senile then just quietly tell him that you’re a bit self conscious about being overweight, don’t want the same self consciousness around food passed on to your children, and so as a family you have a policy of not remarking on what other people are eating because it can make people uncomfortable.

For many older people, a child being a good eater and eating up everything on your plate is a positive thing to be praised for and the notion that commenting on somebody having done that might be considered negative “food policing” not a concept which will have registered.
