To ask for help regarding my son's uni accommodation (help please!!)

My son is due to go to LCCM in September (SE1). His arranged accommodation has fallen through.

There are some student halls nearby which are very expensive (they are privately run). Does anybody know anyone in the area who might have a house share or anything at all in terms of student accommodation? Thank you!

Sorry about your son’s accommodation falling through - that’s a shame. Was it arranged through the uni? If so, have you contacted them to ask if there are any alternative arrangements?

The WIWIKAU (what I wish I knew about university) website and fb group often have people offering accommodation or looking - wide audience of university parents.

urbanbuddha · 25/07/2022 14:56

Do you mean LCC (London College of Communication)? It's part of the University of the Arts so their accommodation services should be able to help - www.arts.ac.uk/study-at-ual/accommodation

Otherwise try spareroom, gumtree and rightmove. Transport's important so check journey times at TFL Journey Planner, night times and day.

Trying to find affordable accommodation in London's a bit of a nightmare atm.
Good luck.

Thank you for your messages. It wasn't through the university. My son was fortunate enough (!) to rent a room from a good friend in London but due to the friend's personal circumstances it has fallen through.

At LCCM there are on on site halls but several suggested nearby. They equate to about £1200 a month (at least) to rent which is a bit steep.

I have now requested to join WIWIKAU and I have answered a few ads on Gumtree. What a nightmare!!

I would avoid gumtree to be honest. I would use Spare Room all the way. I've had some bad experiences on dodgy gumtree viewings.

urbanbuddha · 25/07/2022 16:11

Yeah, I agree you have to be wary on gumtree.

fortunatelynot · 27/07/2022 17:18

Thank you - we are now on Spare Rooms!

Appreciate how expensive Halls are but it is usually a much better experience to start in Halls, for meeting people etc,

phishy · 27/07/2022 17:27

Perhaps join Craigslist too?

To be honest I remember top end uni accomodation was over £1000pcm nearly 10 years ago and not in London! They did have cheaper options but the fanciest was definitely over £1000.

Was about to say my London uni wasn’t nearly that much ten years ago but realised I’m 38 so I was at uni TWENTY years ago.

yikes.

I would agree with a PP about halls, if you can suck up the cost it is sooo worth it.
