Life was just so much better?

Was watching ‘10 days to lose a guy’ before with my mum and we were discussing how they don’t really make any decent films nowadays (sure there used to be loads)
Where’s the decent music too? There’s the odd good tune here and there but most good new music seemed to cease around 9/10 years ago.
I know we always look back at the past with rose tinted glasses, I was 24, thin, no responsibilities etc etc. But aside from this, weren’t they just better days in the world/society? Less worry, more relaxed etc?
Maybe it’s just me and I’m getting old

As an aside, my thought pattern started since I couldn’t believe this film was almost 20 years ago…went so fast, didn’t it…

Rose tinted glasses.

Yutes · 24/07/2022 21:06

The film hasn’t aged well, and isn’t really that good.

Awayfromallthiscrap · 24/07/2022 21:06

@Wickywickyyow Do you really think so…it feels so much like times now are much shitter…personally I’m happy with a child etc etc…but the world around us, everything…wasn’t it just much better, more positive then?

We have definitely changed the way watch films and TV with streaming etc ,I was 28 ,20 years ago and imo 90,s music was better ,just my preference though
I'm not sure things were better 20 years ago ,9 / 11 Iraq war etc
We didn't have as much 24 hr news coverage though

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/07/2022 21:07

I think it's a getting older thing. 20 years ago I met my now DH and was loving everything but my mum probably thinks the same about the 60's. Music was better in the 90's though Wink

fatlazycow · 24/07/2022 21:07

I still find it very weird that ‘20 years ago’ is the early 2000s!

I bet so many people momentarily think the 80s

Awayfromallthiscrap · 24/07/2022 21:08

@Yutes It is massively good, but was an entertaining, simple rom com that I actually sat and watched all the way through. I remember there being lots like that back then (plus really great films from other genres) now, what is there

@Yutes *Isnt massively good, that meant

I know it's weird to think people who were born in the early 00,s are adults and not in primary school.

Awayfromallthiscrap · 24/07/2022 21:11

90’s music was definitely the best, but to be honest, there was still good music coming out in the 00’s…Arctic monkeys, Bloc party, lots of great indie etc..even up until around 2012 perhaps..not much after that.
Just feeling nostalgic watching it, I guess, I mean internet wouldn’t have even really been that big back then…simpler times

20 years ago was 10 months after 9/11. The world was kinda shit scared about everything really. We knew a war was coming in the Middle East. I don't remember it being an especially amazing time.

Awayfromallthiscrap · 24/07/2022 21:12

@Needmorelego Yes, perhaps literally just before then, times were good…lots changed after that

Grapewrath · 24/07/2022 21:16

I remember it being a time of real uncertainty tbh…both personally and in the wider context
Music from that era I remember Nelly, Ashanti, Ja Rule and Jlo.
The cost of property was high from what I remember- we had terrible trouble trying to rent a flat

pastypirate · 24/07/2022 21:20

21 years ago I was living in Manhattan - my sex and the city dream. I came back to the uk days before 911. After that was a frightening time.

I went clubbing a lot and in a couple of years away travelling again. It was a carefree time for me though I never had any money but since I didn't have kids it was a different circumstance.

I think the late noughties were easier for me - worked part time and got a good whack of tax credits so I wasn't on the bones of my arse all the time. I went back to uni in 2006 and though I gave loans. Could live on the finance it was ok. Not awful.

In the 00 I listened to sugababes and Amy wine house and it seemed like interesting female artists were around. I don't hate current music. Except Ed Sheeran

HippeePrincess · 24/07/2022 21:21

I’m sorry to say op it’s your age

Springdaisy · 24/07/2022 21:23

I think people are just much more relaxed, carefree and positive in general in their 20s than they are in their 30s with kids and responsibilities.

Mammami · 24/07/2022 22:06

I think there has been a seismic chance in the last 20 years, with the internet and social media and how we 'consume content' that has been a dramatic change and not necessarily for the better. Would love to be 20 years ago :)

EnjoythemoneyJane · 24/07/2022 22:10

Sorry but it’s your age! Everyone feels this kind of nostalgia for the music and films of their twenties, which spark memories of being carefree and partying and having fun, regardless of what decade it was. Life always feels like it was better then, whether you’re 40 now or 80, and that association will give those things a rosy glow for you, no matter how badly they’ve aged in reality.

But I think it’s really sad when people get stuck in that period and never move on. There are amazing films being made all the time, and brilliant music - you just have to be open minded and seek out new stuff. Saying things like “all the best music was made in the (insert decade)” is patently obviously bollocks, and that kind of mindset will prematurely age you.

Ringmaster27 · 24/07/2022 22:10

Was discussing similar with a friend the other day!
Started off talking about food from back in the day 😂 Was a Snickers bar genuinely massive compared to now?! Or did it just seem that way because my hands and mouth were so small 20 years ago?! Because a snickers these days is a sad state of affairs. Gone in 3 bites.

Recyclingbins · 24/07/2022 22:17

I hate early 00s music! I think it’s so bad - Beyoncé, loads of shit from pop idol, crappy pop… I prefer 90s or stuff from the last decade, but really don’t like 00s music at all. And I was in my 20s then & having a fab time so it’s not always nostalgia talking!

Leafyhouse · 24/07/2022 22:44

I see many threads reminiscing about the Blair years. Cool Britannia, 1996 Euros etc. Those were the days of student grants, affordable housing, Britpop, and the Internet wasn't nearly as pervasive at that time. Slightly more than 20 years though.

gnilliwdog · 24/07/2022 22:45

Mmm, I'm going to say mid to late 90s were interesting - Shallow grave, Trainspotting, La Haine, Prodigy, Leftfield. Artistically I suppose there was Damian Hirst, Tracey Emin - controversial but trying to push the envelope. 2002 wasn't particularly memorable for me.
