To ask my neighbour to turn the TV down?

I bought this flat thinking that, because it was old, it would be quiet.

Seems I was wrong!

I can hear my neighbours above and below, either gaming, or watching tv/listening to music.

I don't know if I'm just unlucky and have two louder than average neighbours.

Anyway... the worst for me is the noise from the neighbour below watching TV. It's all dramatic, heavy music - often Star Wars, I'm sure. Which is continuous. If not that, then it's orchestral music.

AIBU to ask him if he could turn it down a little? And if not U, how do I ask? Knock his door, or send him a polite text?

We have a WhatsApp for the building, but I e never messaged anyone out with that chat.

I feel like a right miserable bat, but when his tv/music is on, it's relentless.

They probably don't know how loud it sounds in your place. You could ask them to turn down the bass, maybe.
But is there something you can do to deaden the sound? Thicker carpets? Insulation? DS is a builder and has put sound insulation in both the floors and ceilings of his flat in an old house and now can't hear his neighbours (and vv, presumably). So it's possible.

Thanks @AssignedSlytherinAtBirth

By the power of MN, it's actually stopped as soon as I wrote this post Grin

And you're right, he probably doesn't realise. They're all decent neighbours. My teen likes his gaming and loves his music, so I hope if the noise coming from ours was ever an issue, that they would feel able to say so.

I am going to change the living room carpet over the next six months or so, so I'll look at upgrading the underlay, etc.

I don't imagine I can do anything with the ceiling as it has decorative cornicing/ceiling rose.

Saying to them that you hope your DS's gaming doesn't disturb them is a good way of introducing the subject.
The decorative features could be removed and put back maybe? IDK. It's worth getting a builder in for an opinion. Good luck!
