Shared Ownership for Singletons only?

Hi,

Moved from Chat…

I’m single (happily so) and on a low salary, no benefits and struggling/fighting to save to buy a home.

I have a friend in a similar position but she is a parent (dead beat partner/father legged it). She feels that Shared Ownership homes should only be available to single people who have just one salary, and that priority should be given to single parents.

I can see her point but only because I am struggling to see myself as a home owner (realistically) but I suppose I’m seeing only one perspective having always struggled, and don’t want to bring my personal feelings into this.

I also don’t want to be resentful of a situation I can’t currently improve much, unlike my friend.

What do others think? And what/ realistically- can someone single, on a low salary and no benefits, actually do? Do you go up north or something? Is it really that cheap there in decent enough areas, and can a single person on a low salary (circa £25k or so) actually get a mortgage of some sort?

For most your earnings can’t exceed. Certain amount but you also need a deposit, so more likely to be single and on a slightly higher income that 2 on minimum wage?

Definitely tough- especially for a singleton!
