Don't know what to do...

So my neighbours have rabbits. These rabbits obviously live in a hutch. Their patio gets the same amount of sun as mine does, so I am fully aware it's in full sun until about 2pm. She told me today that one of the rabbits died during the heatwave - These rabbits would have been living in a fucking sauna. I stepped one foot into my shed and closed the door.

AIBU for being angry at their stupidity for not moving the hutch into shade (which their house has a side alley completely shaded). That poor rabbit. It's not like they didn't have days and days to move the hutch to prevent a bunny death. Bizarrely she didn't seem to correlate a wooden structure as potentially getting unbearably hot.

I am an animal lover and spent the entire heatwave focusing solely on keeping my dogs cool...

What is wrong with people?

Call the rspca?

Suzi888 · 22/07/2022 23:13

So is the other poor sucker left in the sun?

God, I hate humans. Selfish beyond belief…. Could you see the hutch and the rabbits in full sun?

Hideous woman

SareBear87 · 22/07/2022 23:35

Omg that's horrific!
We moved mine to the coolest place possible, supplied frozen and chilled water bottles, sun reflectors (like what you put on the car dashboard) and a micro fan on for mine and they were still really hot!
If it's warm again I'd be calling the rspca or at the very least asking her to move them somewhere more suitable!

Tinkerbellflowers · 22/07/2022 23:38

Sadly, I imagine many rabbits didn't make it through the heatwave. I dont know what the RSPCA can do now, but there are lots of tips on their website about keeping rabbits cool in hot weather. If we have warning of another heatwave, could you offer to help her move the hutch into a more shaded area? Obviously she should have thought of this herself, but unfortunately so many rabbit owners don't give their bunnies the right care. 😥

That's dreadful, I spent the two days worrying about the wild rabbits that live outside my office (next to a main road on a small stretch of grass seems a strange place to set up home but hey ho) let alone when it is an actual pet..

I'm not sure if there is anything that could be done, do people get prosecuted if say a dog does in a hot car?

(Wild rabbits are fine, little one was playing out today)

WingingItSince1973 · 23/07/2022 00:28

That's horrific. That poor poor rabbit! For a start I don't agree with the way alot of rabbits are kept. Small hutches (prisons), not enough outside play, just left alone most of the time in their tiny hutches. But in a heat wave not even moving them to the shade or even given them access to the grass so they can move around and chose a cool spot is despicable! My animals had more fans and cool packs than we did. I cant imagine what those rabbits went through. I'd have to say something to her.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2022 00:39

The wild rabbits will have a warren somewhere, whitefire, they'll have been able to get out of the sun there.

YANBU, OP. The most charitable explanation for your neighbour is extreme stupidity.

SaySomethingMan · 23/07/2022 00:46

That’s such a horrible way for any living being to go. Truly horrid.

Yabu for being angry if you didn’t say anything to them, as an animal lover, because they’re likely to repeat it.

You spent the “entire” heatwave keeping your dogs cool?

Stichintime · 23/07/2022 00:54

I'm sure the wild rabbits had it worked out!

givemeastiffone · 23/07/2022 04:13

@SaySomethingMan

I did say to her 'why didn't you move the hutch round the corner?' And 'You know it died because that would have been like a bloody sauna!'... But there was no reaction ..,.

If she still has another living rabbit, I'd call the RSPCA pronto and report her for failing to take adequate care of them. Just say exactly what you've said here. Poor rabbit.
