"Educate yourself"

AIBU to hate this phrase? It seems to be everywhere recently as another way of saying "You are ignorant and uneducated unless you totally agree with me, and until you agree with me you will continue to be uneducated."

It's up there with 'Ive done my research' Smile

This. ^ The phrase 'educate yourself' almost always comes exclusively from liberal-leftie 'woke' types too. They're usually the one with a superiority complex, who think NO-ONE's point of view is correct except theirs.

@MiriMollyMartha YANBU.

Bang on. A deeply unpleasant group of people.

TheKeatingFive · 24/07/2022 07:38

It's usually used by people who can't or won't post evidence to back up their pov.

I would have said the opposite. I guess it depends on which online barny people are involved in.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/07/2022 08:42

Ive used it once on mn in reply to an op who was moaning about the EU and how she admired Sweden for not being a member. In that instance I thought it was fair enough. Im not prepared to have a discussion about something so huge with someone who doesnt even know the basics.

Other than that I agree with your sentiment entirely. It can be used just to shut somebody down just like Shut up Karen. And refusing to engage in discussions is what gets peoples backs up and actually hardens their reasoning. So I probably didnt help the Remain cause 😳

Thepeopleversuswork · 24/07/2022 08:50

It is patronising.

Although I did find myself thinking it a lot during the pandemic when faced with total batshittery from people who had no grasp of science or statistics but were confidently parroting total shite about vaccines.

Jeschara · 22/07/2022 16:22

The person saying it is very patronising and ignorant.

Without exception in my experience - I am super pro education but the "education" they refer to almost always boils down to 'watch the same biased videos as I have and accept them with thought consideration or critique' makes me cringe every time.

Missisipihallelujah · 24/07/2022 10:43

CorrodedCoffin · 24/07/2022 05:11

Are you seriously bringing race into this..? This reads as “I’ve said something racist and been called out on it”.

No it doesn't. It means, for example, if you disagreed with ppl taking the knee, you were told to educate yourself. It is patronising, arrogant and, most ironic of all, intolerant. The R word is thrown about so lazily these days and you have just confirmed that.

SerendipityJane · 24/07/2022 10:52

I always thought it meant "I have lost the argument" ? Certainly how I've always interpreted it. Good way of not cluttering life up with idiots.

Agree with both of you.

HRTQueen · 24/07/2022 11:00

I don’t have a problem with it

if I have made a statement and its incorrect I don’t mind being corrected or told I should educate myself

I would rather not be ignorant

Then I will reply

where I have seen it used

as many men are victims of dv

why do just Black Lives Matter all lives should matter (not understanding why the movement started)

and as for claims about what Muslims believe in/do I don’t know where to start

Usually yes.

Or ‘you got schooled’

EV117 · 24/07/2022 12:41

I think it’s more about people basing an argument on misconceptions or just plain lazy assumptions.
Something like ‘school staff don’t need a pay rise because they only work 9-3 and have long holidays where they don’t need to work…’
Or ‘formula shouldn’t be readily available because most women can easily breastfeed if they put their minds to it, they’ve been doing it for thousands of years…’
When people support their views with bullshit I think it’s fair enough to advise them to educate themselves.

Fluffymule · 24/07/2022 12:41

Educate yourself
Do better
Be kind

Usually spouted by patronising people, convinced of their own moral superiority, unable or unwilling to engage rationally or politely with debate or disagreement on their opinions.

Can be translated to “just shut up (and let me have the last word)”
