Teenage boy smell

Rainingagaininseattle · 21/07/2022 19:29

I'm currently temporarily sleeping in my teenage son's bedroom (long story). It has a body odour smell. I've washed bedding, duvet, dressing gown etc. Kept window open for the last month, checkec for dirty clothes (found some under the bed), got rid of 6 dirty mugs and mopped the floor but there's still a whiff.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't like the chemical smell of air fresheners so wondering if there are any natural solutions?

Clean the mattress before flipping it (bicarb & vacuum).

I'd also haul it out to air in the garden for 24 hours, the fresh air and sunlight will kill bacteria.

Hire a carpet cleaner.

Continie to air the room as much as possible.

I've replaced the pillows and the window has been open for a month but I'm definitely going to try the shake and vac and dettol spray, thank you!

Binned the mattress. Left it in the hallway for collection the next day. Jakers the smell when I came down the following morning 🤮

springisaroundthecorner · 21/07/2022 23:39

Also, make sure any mattress has a waterproof cover. Then put on a fitted brushed cotton sheet and finally another sheet on top. That will stop sweat etc from getting into the mattress. Same with pillows, always use pillow protectors and wash regularly. Wash bedding twice a week. Teen boys sweat a lot !

Rainingagaininseattle · 21/07/2022 23:40

I can't afford to bin the mattress! I've washed the mattress cover and the duvet and replaced the pillows. I do think it's partly the mattress.

A mattress that has always had a proper cover on it shouldn't smell?

Iliveonahill · 21/07/2022 23:45

It’s testosterone. I have two late teens. It stinks. It creeps into the hall. It’s very distinctive and you can’t get rid of it. It’s the same as the yellow stains some men leave on pillow cases 🤮

Will be the mattress for sure- if you can afford it bin it- my DS is now 20 and the pungent whiff has abated - was at it's worse between 14-18- they cannot help it and to be fair DS is autistic and has to have a bath/shower every single night without fail before going to bed.
That is where he is at the moment even though we have just got in from a big night out - if it was 2 am New Years Eve he bathes before bed so it is not that he is sweaty/dirty getting in! Clean PJs every night as well.
When he leaves home his bed is going in the bin! I don't care if the room stays bare while I save up for a new one.

Rainingagaininseattle · 22/07/2022 00:04

It's out of the question to bin the mattress but I am going to try shake and vac on it, a new cover and flipping it over

God doesn't it linger 🤢 I wish my perfume had this kind of staying power!

JaneJeffer · 22/07/2022 00:31

I thought this was going to be about Lynx

SpaceJamtart · 22/07/2022 00:35

Also maybe wash the walls? I couldn't locate a smell and it turned out to be where he propped his feet up on the wall by his bed, he always wore socks so there were no marks on the wall it just sort of smelt.

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 22/07/2022 01:09

You’ve already checked under the bed for clothes. Have another look to see if there is still a sock under there. If it is a stiff, crunchy sock, that could explain the smell! 😱

Cookerhood · 22/07/2022 21:23

FS also does the yellow stain thing on his pillows/sheets. I think that's oil from his spotty back. Maybe that's what smells?

Cookerhood · 22/07/2022 21:24

DS

Rainingagaininseattle · 22/07/2022 23:02

It was mainly the mattress, I sprayed it and flipped it over and then washed the mattress protector again. I did also boil the pillow cases in an old saucepan. The smell has nearly gone!

Rainingagaininseattle · 22/07/2022 23:05

Yes the pillow cases were yellowish as well

I once had the (mis)fortune to tour an old Victorian prison building.

Before being decommissioned it had been used as a youth detention centre.

It had been out of use for YEARS, but that smell of teen hung in the air in the whole building.

woolwinder · 23/07/2022 09:25

In my late 30s I took an accounting course at a local college. The first day we went into a room and, puzzled at the smell, I asked the lecturer 'Has there been a goat in here?'. She grinned and said 'No, twenty 16-year-old boys. I'll open the window'.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/07/2022 09:30

Oust spray.

You will thank me and change your mind about chemical sprays.😂

Upontherooftops · 23/07/2022 09:58

Does he have shinpads? I couldn't work out why the smell wouldn't clear until i realised shinpads weren't getting washed.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2022 10:25

Just out of interest as I have been puzzled by a smell in my ds11 room. He shoes no signs of puberty, did have whiffy underarms one day though.

his room for a while has a weird smell that I can’t get rid of. Could it be hormones at 11? No signs of puberty?

What did you spray it with, please?

Rainingagaininseattle · 25/07/2022 01:10

Just febreze. To be honest though I don't think the smell has totally gone. I think I need to try shake and vac

Sorry, but that stench could be coming from not properly disposed semen tissues.
