Learner Driver

Just had a altercation with lady who tooted my D whilst out practicing driving. We unfortunately got caught in some slow moving traffic and D kept stalling. Lady behind started to toot, it happened a few times in a row and my D got very stressed. I made a ‘sign’ and tried to forget it. Next second she’s out of her car banging on my D window. AIBU to expect people to respect the fact that everyone needs to learn to drive! Without hassle!

did you say anything to her when she started banging on the window? - i would have got out of the car and had words with her myself!

PuttingDownRoots · 21/07/2022 13:00

Beeping your horn at a panicking learner driver... sure way to give them confidence...

Some people need to remember we were all learners once!

(Flashbacks to the time I stalled across the middle of a mini roundabout...)

YANBU.
Apart from being a downright nasty thing to do, it's likely to be counterproductive as the learner is likely to get more stressed and less able to get going.

Georgieporgie29 · 21/07/2022 13:16

YANBU
I am currently regularly sitting with my DS whilst he is learning and I’ve lost count of the absolute arseholes that have beeped at him. He was at a set of traffic lights, they turned green and he was just getting his bite and the car behind beeped him. It made him jump and he stalled. The lights then went to red as he was going into neutral/handbrake on/started engine etc. and they beeped him again! He was a bloody nervous wreck the next time they turned green. I would have been furious if they had got out of the car and knocked on his window!
with such a short fuse they shouldn’t be driving a hunk of metal around. We’ve all had to learn at some point, a bit of patience goes a long way!

I may have said the odd word. I ended up swapping into drivers seat shortly after.. walking round the back of the car to highlight the L plate!

And we were in traffic moving about a metre at a time, hardly holding up the traffic!

YANBU why do people do this to learners! I’m 27 and passed a few years ago but seriously this bothered me so much

ErrolTheDragon · 21/07/2022 18:16

Unfortunately some people are bullies.

Brefugee · 22/07/2022 09:00

People should be patient with learners and give them room.

But what time was it? was it during rush hour? I get completely pissed off with learners holding up traffic with stalling because they don't know how to drive when I'm trying to get to work or home from work (I don't beep them because I'm not an arse)
In short: be kind to learners if you're a driver, if you're a learner use appropriate roads to learn on according to your skills.

girlmom21 · 22/07/2022 09:04

She sounds like a nasty cow if the traffic was really slow moving anyway, which it clearly was or she wouldn't have left her own car.

flattie123 · 22/07/2022 10:53

It was 11.30 in the morning…it was a main road unfortunately there had been an accident which caused a lot of traffic in the area. I wouldn’t have taken that route had I know, it was pretty stressful. Hopefully hasn’t put her off too much, woman really scared her. Wouldn’t want to learn to drive again myself, some people drive so badly and have no patience 😕

YANBU I’m a learner and people drive like absolute dicks around me, beeping, cutting me up or pulling out/across me when they shouldn’t/don’t have enough time because they assume I’ll be going really slowly. DH said he really noticed the difference when he went out in my car without taking the L plate off.

Trulyweird1 · 22/07/2022 11:06

Your poor Dd. Other driver sounds ridiculous, and as pp said, if her fuse is that short she probably needs to quit driving herself.
I have used the odd hand signal myself when people try to bully me on the road, but these days I just wave merrily and go on my way. Seems to irritate them more 😁

marrymeadam · 22/07/2022 20:31

My poor DD is struggling with other drivers whilst learning. She stalled over and over whilst the lights changed 3 times. The more people beep or even if she thinks they might she gets more nervous. People are such arseholes. Why is it impossible for them to remember what it was like?

There are impatient folk on the road. Better your dd encounters them when you're with her.
