Unhygienic cooking of raw chicken - AIBU?

erghjklkuytrh · 20/07/2022 15:43

I live with family and earlier I saw a member of my family cooking raw chicken, I saw them use the hand that had been handling the raw chicken to undo jars of spices, turn the cooker on and go in the cutlery drawer. I don't eat meat so have a strong aversion to raw meat to start with, but AIBU to be annoyed and want to confront them about it? I know they will be annoyed at me and think I'm being OTT but the whole kitchen feels contaminated and disgusting now, it turned my stomach. I had a recent bout of food poisoning and after seeing what happened today I'm pretty sure I know how I got it...

Yuck 🤢

I always keep one hand clean and one hand for handling raw chicken.

Ontomatopea · 20/07/2022 15:47

This is disgusting. Ban them from cooking. They could kill someone.

doubleshotcappuccino · 20/07/2022 15:49

Yep you are right shouldn't use the same hand .. usually best to get the spices mixed then wash hands and handle the chicken .. can't be too careful especially in this weather x

LadyCluck · 20/07/2022 15:51

YANBU

I once saw my husband prepare raw chicken and then wipe his hands on the tea towel. 😡

RampantIvy · 20/07/2022 15:53

I agree, this sounds grim.

You don't need to "confront" them, just show them some information about the dangers of handling raw chicken.

AtwilightRebellion · 20/07/2022 15:53

YANBU. I just marinated some chicken and washed my hands with soap at least 5 times until it went in fridge.

Particularly in such warm weather food hygiene should be stringent.

I eat meat but would be disgusted by that casual approach.

Wingedharpy · 20/07/2022 15:53

Try educating them rather than confronting them.
You are right to be concerned.

FlibbertyGiblets · 20/07/2022 15:54

Shudder. Can you make plans to move out?

Thelnebriati · 20/07/2022 15:56

I get packs of 100 plastic food handling gloves on ebay; grab a pack of those and a bottle of anti bac kitchen spray Envy

ForeverandAlways4 · 20/07/2022 16:09

That's a big no no

Yodaisawally · 20/07/2022 16:11

Urgh. I wouldn't eat there. If they're that lax with chicken what are they like with other things. I'm guessing the chicken hand goes on your veggie food too if they are cooking for you...

Nancydrawn · 20/07/2022 16:14

Confront them?!

It's gross and dangerous and of course they should wash their hands after touching raw chicken.

But all this language of confronting and challenging is absolutely bonkers.

Vikinga · 20/07/2022 16:16

Yuck. When I handle raw meat, I use a dedicated chopping board and then wash my hands (usually can manage to avoid touching it) and pour boiling water on the chopping board.

PeskyPurdy · 20/07/2022 16:17

Omg who is actually voting YABU ?! Disgusting!

Ameliarosethistle · 20/07/2022 16:21

Yeuck! can you antibac wipe the jars, fridge door, taps etc.?

Ameliarosethistle · 20/07/2022 16:23

Also if you have a dishwasher pop all the cutlery into it or wash them in hot soapy water.

GCAcademic · 20/07/2022 16:24

YANBU. My husband is banned from handling raw chicken (over and above any other meat) for this reason. I don’t even let him clean the plastic tray it come in, for recycling. He can’t be trusted.

GCAcademic · 20/07/2022 16:25

But all this language of confronting and challenging is absolutely bonkers.

At least she didn’t use the dreaded phrase, “calling out”!

ThreeLittleDots · 20/07/2022 16:26

Dirty idiot! Of course you should say something. I'm surprised you didn't at the time!

PinkSyCo · 20/07/2022 18:44

I find this so hard to believe. It’s not even like you could forget you’ve just been handling raw chicken when you’re trying to open jars with slimy hands is it? It’s gross and it’s crazy that you’re hesitant about confronting a member of your own family about it.

ANewNameANewDay · 20/07/2022 19:07

If you think that's bad...I once watched FIL baste a chicken by scooping his hand into the butter, back to chicken, back to butter...you get the picture! Made me bork.

Ontomatopea · 20/07/2022 19:38

Ask them to lick the surface. If they won't then they know what they've done is gross.

TwoMonthsOff · 20/07/2022 19:39

just explain Campylobacter to them 🤮
