To think £250 is too much to spend on Pokemon cards?

Just had my sister on the phone in tears because she's struggling for money and has just found out that her partner has spend £250+ on pokemon cards this month alone. Her car was damaged recently and is off the road awaiting repairs. She asked him to help with the costs and he refused. (he doesn't drive for medical reasons but expects lifts everywhere)

He thinks she's being unreasonable, she thinks he's being a selfish twat. They live together and split the bills pretty evenly as far as I know. He works, she's off currently on maternity and is on a very limited income.

Aibu to think he's a selfish git and manchild?

I don't think he is manchild for liking to collect Pokemon cards, but he is a selfish twat for prioritising buying them over something that was essential and urgent.

dotdotdotdash · 19/07/2022 21:10

Of course, it's totally unreasonable. I'm so sorry she is committed to someone who is so immature and lacking in empathy.

Nasty pig.

Don't think liking Pokémon cards makes him a man child. BUT... he shouldn't be putting that over bills and fixing the car he uses.
Your poor sister.

Leeds2 · 19/07/2022 21:17

Maybe he will realise he is in the wrong when your sister is unable to give him lifts.

It sounds like they have separate finances? If so, is that his preference, hers or mutually agreed?

DP and I have joint finances and I couldn’t imagine doing it differently, but I know (from Mumsnet) that separate finances are fairly normal. If they have mutually agreed that sort of set up, then this seems like a fairly normal consequence of that.

LikeADogWithABone · 19/07/2022 21:34

It's hard to know but it doesn't sound great. I'm not sure the fact it's Pokémon cards makes any difference. You would have to know the details of all their finances to be able to judge.

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 21:53

They're not well off enough for £250 to be pin money, if that makes sense. He's on 22k a year (he told me, I didn't ask).

Their rent is £450 a month, for context 😕

He's an idiot. Not earning big bucks, partner and baby to support
My ex partner used to pull stunts like this
Until I booted his arse through the door

Catsdrool · 19/07/2022 22:00

If he’s bought singles he can bloody well take them to the shop and trade them in and help get the car back on the road. If he’s wasted his money buying packs well then he really is an idiot.

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 22:12

I do believe it's the packs he's been buying. He has a massive box of them that has loads in (looked like about 100 last time I saw it)

100% childish of him. Bills come first , especially repairing the only car the household has. He sounds like a bit of an arse 🙄

Liking Pokémon cards does indeed make him a man child, but spending money you can’t afford on them makes him a prick.

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 23:52

Yeah, the cards aren't the issue in so much as how much he's spending on them!

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 20/07/2022 02:26

Exactly. From your description of their finances, it's very unlikely that their budget will allow such a spend on something completely unnecessary without saving up for a few months and after essentials like the household car has been repaired.

I bet your sister doesn't get to spend money on herself like that. I don't suppose these cards can be sold?

Sadly it sounds like your sister has had a baby with a selfish waster who isn't mature enough to be a good father capable of prioritising money like a responsible adult.

He either needs to sort himself out or she needs to LTB.

Of he's buying them in 100 packs they are £3.99 a pack so more like £399 he's spent on them.
