To be a bit offended by this?

Was stressing about a presentation at work (didn’t go well) and confided to my manager about it. Their response was “people aren’t judging you as much as you think.”

Would you be a bit offended by this? I already feel out of place, it had made me think that people (colleagues) are all judging negatively rather than in any way on my side...

No I wouldn't be offended. I think he just means people have their own shit going on and arent picking apart your stuff as much as you probably are. Which is likely true.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/07/2022 20:53

It means you are being over sensitive and over thinking it. Take a deep breath and relax.

luxxlisbon · 19/07/2022 20:54

You are working quite hard to twist this into something to be offended by.

Perfectlystill · 19/07/2022 20:54

No I would not be offended by this. He's right.

neverbeenskiing · 19/07/2022 20:55

I think you've misunderstood. You're worried about being judged for your presentation not going well, so your manager has tried to reassure you that this is unlikely to be the case. They were trying to be nice.

ParasiticMicrowasp · 19/07/2022 20:55

No. Put bluntly, he means that people are less interested in you than you think they are. They probably stopped thinking about you as soon as the meeting finished. You're not a priority to them. It's nothing personal.

MichelleScarn · 19/07/2022 20:56

What bit are you offended by?

dudsville · 19/07/2022 20:56

You've misunderstood him. He was trying to help you, recognising that you were anxious, which is a self critical stance, i.e. "what if i fail, what if I'm not good enough?", and he was saying others aren't being as critical of you as you are of yourself.

Festoonlights · 19/07/2022 20:57

Translation - you are being paranoid. No one actually cares

Yup. This

AlisonDonut · 19/07/2022 20:58

Good grief.

drpet49 · 19/07/2022 20:58

Why would anyone be offended by this?

Whatamisupposedtomakeofthis · 19/07/2022 20:58

Ok. Makes sense! Thanks

He meant
no one is judging you, you’re too hard on yourself. You’re in your head

you heard
people are judging me negatively a teeny bit

Heyisforhorses · 19/07/2022 20:59

When I met my DP and was stressing over something similar he told me to take my mind off myself and he was right. People are not as judgey about us as we are about ourselves, most just don't have time or headspace to judge you. Your manager was being kind.

Whatamisupposedtomakeofthis · 19/07/2022 20:59

@Bunce1 makes perfect sense! Thanks 😘

He sounds 100% correct. There is literally zero to be offended by yet him saying no one's judging you, you have taken that ironically as a massive judgment.

nomistake · 19/07/2022 20:59

No, they're telling you to get over yourself.

PresidentByeThen · 19/07/2022 21:02

No.

But I would perhaps take it as a teeny hint that you might be coming across as a tad whiny/ needy/ self obsessed or low self esteemed. Which isn't a great work look.

Head up, shoulders back- not everything 'goes well'. That's life!

carefullycourageous · 19/07/2022 21:03

Oh Brew for you you wally - they were trying to be nice and supportive!

ldontWanna · 19/07/2022 21:06

He's just saying you're your harshest critic.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/07/2022 21:07

It’s good advice for life. I’m sure they care about your presentation enough but they’ll also be thinking about their weekends, what to have for dinner, how hot it is etc.

catfunk · 19/07/2022 21:41

Yabvvu

spinachandchickpea · 19/07/2022 22:32

Why are so many people assuming the manager is a man?

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 19/07/2022 22:46

It means you're over thinking it, and need to work on your resilience to deal with those worries
