to say no to a roast dinner in this heat?!

I want shopping today for some quick to cook/ not cook at all food.
Tinned tuna, sweetcorn, pre cooked rice, salad, deli items, bread, crisps, ice-cream. Just easy food that doesn't need anything or only needs to be heated for 2 mins.

Well dh wants to go shopping for a full chicken and have a roast! Well it is Sunday...

He thinks I'm lazy because I want easy dinners (that's not lazy it's good sense!)

I think he is suicidal and his aim of cooking a roast dinner in this heat Is to boil us to death in our own home.

Oh he also pulled all of my make shift curtains down because 'it's so dark it looks like a crack den in here'. I don't understand it, we have small children (2-10 years old) and we need to be cool in here.

Hid argument is that he has to work in it (good for you here's a medal) and he also has to work with boiling hot equipment In hot conditions so we should suck up a Sunday roast.

I can't even be bothered to argue.

(ps I lay frozen water bottles around him and put up some make shift curtains while he was sleeping earlier because our bedroom was so hot, so it's not like I'm an evil bitch who doesn't care he's hot when he works, I care about him!)

Is he cooking it? If so, YABU, he can cook what he likes. You can choose whether to eat it or not.

If he expects you to cook it then YANBU.

dementedpixie · 17/07/2022 14:51

Could he get chicken pieces and bbq them and have an alternative roast dinner. We're having bbq tonight so we aren't cooking indoors

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 17/07/2022 14:51

He’s an idiot!! Keeping curtains closed and windows closed is the general advice. Sticking the oven on for 2+ hours is generally not part of that advice! I’ve bought a load of picnic supplies so that I don’t have to cook for the next couple of days. Can’t think of anything worse than a roast today!

Rebelmcstreettuff · 17/07/2022 14:51

Fuck that OP we have a KFC and Krispy Kreme doughnuts!
Noe exactly our usual Sunday roast but I ain't cooking in this heat,he is totally unreasonable.

dementedpixie · 17/07/2022 14:52

P.s. we only have a roast every 3 or 4 weeks and dh cooks it

Shinyandnew1 · 17/07/2022 14:53

If he is shopping for, cooking and clearing away said roast then he can crack on. Otherwise…!

Blankbias · 17/07/2022 14:53

Surely whoever is cooking gets to decide?

Lovelydovey · 17/07/2022 14:54

I got up at 6am, roasted a chicken and boiled some
new potatoes. We will have it cold for tea with salad later. I had the front door and all the windows open to cool the house down at the same time. I also made ice cream!

It is definitely too hot to cook in the heat of the day.

PresidentByeThen · 17/07/2022 14:55

YANBU, having said that, I'm doing a roast today Grin

My oven is going on for 45 mins later on, in which there will be a joint of beef for this evening, and for roast beef and gorgonzola salad during the week, some roasties for today, and a couple of jacket potatoes for DD's lunches, two sausage and apple puff pastry rolls, and a gammon, again for during the week.

Basically, my oven is on today and then off for the forseeable. And I admit, I do love my roasts!

Soubriquet · 17/07/2022 14:56

He would hate our house then.

All the curtains are closed and we’ve even rigged more up in places where the sun comes in

I couldn’t eat a hot roast dinner today even if someone else cooked it. The heat from the oven would be awful too

did you get the mash and gravy? because that's a roast I could get my head around!

My ovens not going on till Wednesday

Munchyseeds2 · 17/07/2022 14:56

The oven in my kitchen will be staying off this week!

Titsywoo · 17/07/2022 14:57

He sounds horrible. Put up your curtains again and if he tries to pull them down lose your shit at him. How selfish. Our house is very dark now as me and DH spent ages putting carboard over the windows to block the light. I'd rather be cool!

he wants to but I've said no way. the oven and hobs would have to be on for nearly 2 hours!

I love roast dinners in the winter but the summer is hot enough as it is!

Say yes to the roast! We're going out. Someone else can cook it and do the washing up!

MintJulia · 17/07/2022 14:58

I guess he'll be cooking it himself then! Is he insane?

For supper tonight, I've got cold ham for ds (teenage meat fiend) and I've made courgettes and green beans in vinaigrette and some walnut bread. There's green salad and coleslaw as well.

I've sliced apples, pear, apricots and satsumas into some orange juice and added a thimble of Grand Marnier. And there's shortbread and creme fraiche to go with it.

Anyone hungry after that lot, can walk to BurgerKing in the heat ! 🤗

TrianglePlayer · 17/07/2022 14:59

I love a roast but even we’re not having one today. Not just because I forgot to buy the meat. But I insisted on one last week as I was cooking. As others have said it’s up to whoever is cooking. Although now you’ve bought all that stuff I’d definitely eat that.

LaChatte · 17/07/2022 14:59

YANBU, putting the oven on during a heatwave isn't a good idea, regardless of who's cooking 😂

teenagetantrums · 17/07/2022 15:01

I just cooked roast dinner for 80 residents in a care home. No way am l cooking another roast tonight. We are having steak and salad. Once I have cooled down from being in the hottest kitchen ever at work

maddiemookins16mum · 17/07/2022 15:02

I have a chicken in the slow cooker. It will be ready about 5pm, having it with Jersey new potatoes, salad and colselaw.

C8H10N4O2 · 17/07/2022 15:02

Is he always this much of a self righteous dickhead or is it a special occasion?

MarshaMelrose · 17/07/2022 15:04

It's NEVER too hot for a roast dinner. 😋 But I always think it tastes better when its cooked by a man! 😉

SquirrelSoShiny · 17/07/2022 15:05

I don't eat meat but weirdly this thread is tempting me 😁
